SD16600: Hoopla greater than sale prices?

folks,

Everywhere I go, I mean watch places, the SD seems to be worshipped as the last great diving watch of its era. Even the consensus here is that the prices are only headed one way, and that is UP and they are rising slowly.

My personal impression is that SDs do not sell like hot cakes. It could be because sellers overprice them but I do see SDs, used ones, not sell as fast as their reputation may lead one to believe.

Am I correct in this assumption?

Well today there are two types of Rolex watch collectors the serious Rolex collector and the Internet hype Rolex collector. To the serious Rolex watch collector the SD would be way down his list of must have watches unless he/she has one already in his/her collection. The 16600 SD was introduced in 1988/9 and has remained unchanged except for a few very minor details until it was discontinued.Although the SD was not sold on the same ratio as say the Sub there sure must be many thousands in this world today and all basically the same except for the case stamps its not a rare watch.

not sure about all of that or if I am even a "collector" as I do not fall into either of the collector categories listed.
So, I am just a fella who has a few watches and I LOVE the SD. All and all, it is probably my favorite watch.
I am not real concerned about resale as I am not going to sell my watches. The SD wears well. It is just different enough that most folks do not know what it is.
I had someone admire and comment on it while I was in the checkout at Home-depot. He asked if that was a Sub and I told him of the SD.
It is one of those things where "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand".
Love the SD...

The SD wears well, is right. It fits perfectly and gets more looks than other models.

A watch (or any object) does not need to be rare in order to be valuable. Desirability is the most important trait and is a reflection of market forces and internet hype for those that think that.

SDs are desirable even if they made a bazillion of them, they are still desirable. So if a bazillion owners are holding on to them because they are desirable, then the few that get offered are going to bring good prices.

Rare...probably not, rare to find a good one for sale, more likely. Desirable...YES!

I guess it helps if you originally bought it at a good price.

I agree, SD's are a perfect watch to add to any collection.

With respect as I'm a newbie here, I think it's a bit condescending to deride someone who likes the SD as falling for "Internet Hype".

I decided upon a SD for my (small) collection because it was a pre-redesign piece, because it was a bit beefier than the sub, and because (most important to me) it had a lineage to the professional divers of old. Would I love to have a COMEX or a double red, or most of all a Milsub? No doubt. Will I ever be likely to afford them? There's also no doubt of that, though not in the way I'd like. ;-)

But I don't think that if people enjoy the SD as an unusual, if not rare, piece with a little history, they should somehow fail to measure up as collectors.

In the end, all collecting is hype. A Rolex might be worth a hundred times its original retail value if someone believes it's worth it, or far less than MSRP for those that believe it's overpriced. To assign a value to the human concept of value, is in itself a preposterous notion.

JMHO.
