Rolex datejust or Tag Heuer carrera 1887
I plan on getting my first luxury watch and cannot decide which one would be best suited for special occassions. I only plan on spending a maximum of 3200 and the watch will be mostly be worn with a suit and tie or nice cloths for going out. I like a classy look and the rolex would have to have the oyster bracelet and fluted bezel.

I'm not familiar w/ the Tag, but seeing as how this is a Rolex site (and I'm a loyalist) I would recommend the DJ.

I have to say the 1887 is a very elegant looking watch. I had a Tag Carrera that I loved but sold it to fund my Sub C. The datejust is a little more conservative (read: classic) and smaller I believe, so you should go to an AD and just try them both on. See what your gut tells you. You can't go wrong with a datejust though... it's just a matter of what look and feel appeals more to you when you have it on the wrist.

The Tag is a designer watch, the Rolex is a classic watch.

I really like the updated DJ with the 41mm size. How much are they going for used?

Not realy answering your question but at the price point why not get an older model Explorer 36mm model. The pictured datejust II's can't be had for the set budget I think. In my opinion mutch more versatile and sportier(like the Tag) then a datejust and probably a litle bit better when it comes to keeping it's worth.
Borrowed this pic from an excellent Dutch seller(hope he doesn't mind). |

i recently read an article somewhere about how the cost of a modern tag movement is between .25% and .50% as in less than 1% of the cost of the watch. Compared to rolex in which the movement represents roughly 33% of the cost of the watch. Does this make sense to anyone. Anyway, GO ROLEX.

In your price range a used Rolex is your best bet for getting a good watch for the money.
