OT - Run, Fat Boy, Run!!
Seemed like a real good idea signing up for the Liverpool Marathon back in February for a 40th birthday present to myself.
That was back in February, and now, my big run is errr, on Sunday I've jogged my way over quite a few miles of tarmac in a poor attempt to convince myself running is FUN. It isn't. Massaging blistered feet with a recovery beer is about the only glimmer of pleasure that I have discovered from plodding my long and lonely road. I'm still doubting my ability to "go the distance"... the weather report is truly atrocious... but I have promised myself an unrestricted Indian feast washed down with at least a gallon of Cobra after I have crossed the finishing line. I'm not aiming for a "time"... a "finish" for my first marathon will be an achievement in itself (realistically under five hours ) On tonight's 10km jog through torrential rain and hailstones, I realised I'm still in need of a pretty big measure of support and motivation to keep me going over 26 miles (42 kilometres) of blood sweat and tears. I will be cheered by any wishes of support you guys can offer me on Sunday morning. Mike Wood (Runner #6938 - there's no hiding it!!) |

Good Luck Mike!
I ran 26.2 a few years ago in 3:34 mins. It is painful but well worth it at the end! I sent you a PM as well. Matt |

You can do it! Those last 5 or 6 miles remember this is a feat few have accomplished and one that can never be taken from you! Enjoy the test! You'll come out of this test a new man!

Good luck Mike! Just remember, pain is temporary but pride is forever. I ran my one and only over 10 years ago - and still proud of it to this day.

Just got back into running myself, but a Marathon is not on my mind yet. Good for you, pushing yourself to do this. Best of luck tomorrow.

I only gone and done it!
Thank you for all the big-ups and support ahead of the Liverpool Marathon yesterday... I made it all the way to the end of my first marathon, and was very pleased with my time of just under 4 hours 39 minutes for the 26.2 mile course!
For the benefit of my very generous supporters, here's the photographic evidence!! 09:22am, and full of nervous energy! 09:28am heading in to the starting pens, with 7,000 other runners! 09:29am, with 42 kilometres to go! 10:20am - 50 minutes late due to Police delaying the start but then we were away! Entering the Queensway Tunnel in Birkenhead (where they filmed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!), one of the two tunnels which goes under the River Mersey And emerging from the Tunnel in Liverpool, after crossing the 13.1 mile half-way point The course ran past the historic Albert Docks on Liverpool's famous River Mersey water-front, and the cold drizzly rain set in The sight of the iconic Liver Building (one of the "Three Graces" on Liverpool's water front at the Pier Head) lifted my spirits as the end of the run approached And after nearly 4 hours and 40 minutes, the last few hundred yards and the My hard-earned finisher's medal, and the actual time I recorded (which tallies with the official timers), and me staggering past 14 miles. My GPS cut a few hundred metres off my distance whilst I was running through the tunnel. It was a fantastic day, with great support from massive crowds who turned out to cheer us on, and the helpers who kept us hydrated with drinks stations along the route. The winning time was 2 hours 35 minutes, and the final stragglers came in around 7 hours. My official position was 3,003, I hope not too bad for a first (and last!) marathon attempt. Never has a cold beer and a hot Indian curry tasted so good afterwards!! Thank you to everyone who generously supported me, you really kept me going as my strength started sapping away on the last 10 miles... cheers! Mike Wood |

Mike congratulations for your well earned accomplishment...not everyone has the determination you showed. And with the carrot(beer and a meal) in front of the horse you had a lot of fun and did what most of us couldn't do!!!
