Need a watch for the oil rig

Hey all hope you all can offer some advice on this topic. I will be going into the oil and gas industry in the next few weeks and will be making some trips out into the field. I need a watch that cn really take a beating. I dont think I want to risk the Sub out there so have to find something else. The Omega X-33 would be nice, but I dont know that I want to spend that much and then destroy it. So far I have been thinking about a G Shock? Those Seiko black monsters looks pretty good also. Are they durable and what is a price range for them. I am welcome to any options so please let me know what you think.

I think I'd go for a G Shock. All plastic and can take one hell of a beating.

James, if you want to check out the Monsters in person, shoot over to Austin Watch and Jewelery on Burnett, they have a nice selection of Seikos and other beaters.

But dude, your subby can take it.

I'd do the Luminix too. At least until Rolex makes a Rigmaster II. :-)

Thanks Daren Ill have to check them out. Oh I know the Sub can take it, especially with the Nato, but how would it look coming out of it. Guess nothing a servicing couldn't take care of. How about Sergio's choke and Harrington's even? The 18th there has some pretty classic sports disasters.

Also I check out that watchprince.com and they have an alligator strap that looks very close to the Omega. I am not sure how it will look on but the return policy seems pretty good if it doesnt look good.

I dont know why they haven't done a rigmaster what harsher environment could they ask for. I have seen an old ad with Red Adair in it though, was pretty cool.

All depends on if you care how your beater looks when you return from the field and obviously you do. Yes, the Sub can take it but I wouldn't want to put mine through that kind of abuse. Depending on what your income is a Seiko would make a good choice but I've hated damaging even my Seikos. I have a Black Monster now that I try to take good care of. If you don't care about the look of the watch while you are in the field and just need something that can take a beating then go with the G Shock. I've had one and they are by far the most durable and reliable and are very inexpensive. You can probably pick one up for around $60.00.

This is my first post and though I do not have a Rolex, I do work on an oil rig in the North Sea (Norwegian sector). I currently have an Omega Speedmaster Professional, an Omega Seamaster professional, an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, in addition to an Oris TT1 Chronograph.

Even if any of these watches could deal with the harsh beating it gets, I always use either my Casio G-shock or my Nixon SS Black Rover.

Great to hear from another guy in the field. I think I will end up with the G-Shock as well. What company do you work for in the North Sea? I just got my first assignment and will be in Western Wyoming. We have three gas fields out there so it should be a fun experience.

G-shock works perfectly, at least for me. It has all the functions you would expect from a digital quartz, and I actually frequently use the countdown timer, stopwatch and alarm to help me in my line of work. Would be nice to give my beauties more wrist time, but I simply don't think it's worth exposing them for the risk of getting trashed out here. It's not just the risk of scratches and beating, but also the risk of exposure to chemicals and the like. I know a few others out here who have Breitling's and the like at home, all wear "sensible" and low cost watches at work - (ex. G-shock, Seiko).

I work for a company called M-I SWACO. Referring to "timebroker" who is asking whether it's 2 weeks on and 2 off - I work 2 on and 4 off, which is the norm for operators and contractors operating in the Norwegian sector. Certain service company's still have 2 on and 3 off, although they also are moving towards the 2-4 schedule.

I think just South of Pinedale I beleive. I havent actually started work yet but that is what I have been told. How is the scenery up there seems like it should be nice.

I will not be working a rotation in response the 2 on 2 off questions. But I know that we do have a potential for 2 on the rig, 1 in the office, and 1 week off.
