Noobie here! Sub questions
Hi All! I am new to the forum! I have been a rolex fan my whole life! I received my first rolex at graduation from college 5 years ago. It was my dad's first rolex when he graduated from college. It is a '78 stainless sub. It is a great watch and even though it hasn't been serviced since the mid 80's still keeps perfect time when I wear it!(doesn't seem to work for my dad). For my dad's 25th aniv. with his company (Bechtel) he was given a new rolex (gold presidential I think). Since he wears that daily, he gave me his gold and stainless sub about six months ago(2000 model I think). It is an awesome watch! About two months ago, it stopped working so I took it to the Rolex building in downtown dallas to have it serviced. I got it back looking brand new! Unfortunately, since I am a city official, I have to be carefull wearing it to work, in fact I rarely do. (I can't drive my corvetes to work either for that matter!) Since I wear it only on the weekends, what is the best method of longevity for it? I have a watch winder from Sharper Image that I am toying with. Is it better to use that watch winder or wind it whenever I wear it? Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, Glenn and welcome to TRF
Well, watch winders are more of a convenience than a necessity If you would have a very complicated watch like a Patek Philippe or IWC perpetual calendar, a watch winder comes in handy so that you do not have to adjust the whole calendar if the watch has stopped. But for a Rolex where you would only have to adjust the date, I do not believe you need a watch winder. So I would just let it stop and give it a full 40 windings before wearing it again. You can read more in the FAQ's, section "Winding setting your watch". here is the link: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=8478 (scroll a bit down) BTW: Could you post pics of your two Subs here? That would be GREAT!

Got to agree with both Bo and Mike just a wind once a month will keep any auto or manual wind watch in top shape if not on wrist.

This is the second post where someone got a Rolex for 20-25 years service. Things must be getting better or I really worked for the wrong outfit!

Whoo Hooo!! Go Tech!!!! Hi to all DFW area guys as well!
I can post better pictures of my Gold/Stainless Sub. Can anyone give advice as to making non-blurry close ups?!?!?! As for the vintage sub, it is now in the safety deposit box. Since I am no longer wearing it daily, my insurance company (USAA) would not ensure it without being appraised. The local jeweler wanted some rediculous $100 to appraise it!!When I get it serviced, I'll have Rolex appraise it. Since I just had the two-tone serviced, they included a complementary appraisal. I'm affraid to leave it around the house, not that I live in a bad area, but rather there are new houses being built all around me and that brings people in and out of my area constantly. Here is a special treat since I do not have pics of vintage sub. This is a picture of ALL the items that came with it. My dad kept everything. The manual, the anchor, the display box....even THE TISSUE! Looking at the certificate it says 1977. Is it like cars so that makes it a 1978 model right?! I kept the box and contents even though the watch is locked up! As for the two tone, I'm trying to find the build date....I was thinking that it was around 2000. It is a Model 16613LN according to the paperwork I got back from Rolex after the service. |

If I were to stay with my current outfit for 25 years I might end up with a certificate. I'll probably be expected to supply the frame for it though. Welcome to the forum Glenn. Glad to have you hear.

Hi, Glen, and welcome from a fellow rookie!!! This forum rocks! The folks here (and the info) really are without peer. As a govn't official myself, I share the inability of wearing my new watch to work as well. I just make sure to wear it around in the evenings and on the weekends. I am still checking the accuracy of my watch frequently on www.time.gov, and so far have encountered no problems (Good to about 1.5 seconds/day, actually!). Enjoy the watches and 'Vettes in good health!
