Buying a Daytona... where are they all?

Hey all...
I currently have an SS sub but am looking to buy a Daytona. Went to Tourneau (NYC, long island, atlantic city)... all laughed at me.

Why is it that Tourneau cant seem to get them at all yet they are all over the internet (alan furman, stein diamonds, etc)?

Is it because ADs realize they can sell it more quickly to secondary internet dealers for less rather than wait around for a spending customer to come in the door paying full price?

What price do you think some of the more reliable internet vendors buy SS Daytonas at?
If I go this route, what is a fair price that I should be able to bargain one down to?
Also, why does it seem auction houses like antiquorum, christies, sothebys, etc. are getting 10-15k for late model daytonas. (buyers premium not withstanding)... more than new retail?!?!?!

Three words...supply and demand!!! $7,900 from an AD if you can get one that route. Easily $10,000+ for BNIB on the secondary market. And just a little less for pre-owned. Crazy!!

PS: I went the second route. I am happy and never looked back.

Certain things seem fishy to me with for instance Antiquorum, Sothebys etc.
They use ways to 'up' the prices after having bought (they buy watches themselves) several of them to sell em with a bigger profit.
There are types of Rolex that are worth more after you bought em at an AD but they are rare, probably because the waiting times are very long, people will pay more to get them immediately, I can be wrong of course :)
By the way, I cannot remember the exact % but at least 10% sold on Sothebys is fake!

I don't know the percentage, but if fact the big auction houses have sold several rare vintage pieces that have later been found to be less than authentic .

I understand many of these were taken back after proof was shown.

Here un the uk, the order books are closed on daytona, so you can only go 'grey', rrp is $8800. they go for about $13-14000 'grey', new unworn.

Agreed.

In the UK a 2005 TT white face Daytona can be had for the equivalent of almost $4,000 less than the SS white face Daytona.

I can't see the joke.

Do a search on Antiquorum for Panerai, certain search pages you will see are full with 'retracted because we were not able to verify it's authenticity due to production date before records of company' something like that, tssssss.

It helps to be a good customer at the AD. I have been promised a SS Daytona in Oct or Nov at list. Coincidentally I have purchased other merchandise there.

Now that I agree with you 100% and IMO anyone who pays these ridiculous grey prices must be sixpence short of a shilling.And again IMO this is whats keeping the Daytona market high and in short supply.You know it I know it, a huge amount of the SS Daytona's somehow find there way onto the grey market.

Tourneau does, believe it not, always have a few new SS daytonas in stock. They are not, however, displayed in the display cases, and aren't available to anybody who just wants to buy one. They are reserved for very very good customers (i.e. celebrities, etc.). I could be wrong, but I also believe that they might sit on the watch for quite a while, "lose" the warranty papers, and covert the watch to "new old stock", which you will see in their "vintage" collection, for upwards of $14,000...

The whole situation regarding the ss Daytonas is unfortuanate.Its the only Rolex I would buy at MSRP.A white dial ss Daytone has a need to be in my collection,to deprive it of that right,is just not right, ... right ??
