Who here has made money on a Rolex?

Just wondering who here has made money on a Rolex?

I have sold three Rolexes, broke even on two OQs and took a bath on a TT DJ. But in fairness the TT DJ was bought new close to retail (my first watch). And I know TT watches don't hold value as well as SS and DJs not as well as sport models. Lost about $2K.

But just wondering how many out there have made money. I get the feeling JJ does okay, but how about the restof you guys?

And how long does it take before the resale value of your watch catches up with the paid price? Maybe 2 to 3 years?

I bought by SS sub date for $3200 about 4 years ago, I think I am finally in the black on that one, but my other watches have some catching up to do.

I must add though, I have complete faith that if you were to sell a watch, Rolex is the one to get your money back on.

On the three Daytonas 16520ies, I made one helluva money

On the rest I have had (Sub Dates, DJ and SDs) I lost some money.

Daytonas sure are golden. (Even though they are SS.)

That is what I like to hear! So maybe a break even point is say 5-10 years?

Did you buy new or pre-owned?

In the early '90s, back home in India, I always reaped good profits on all my Rollies 'cause the importation of Rolex back then was banned and there were no Rolex ADs in Bombay then.

Here in Auckland, I've taken small hits on most of them except for the last two - the Sub-date and the SD.

In reality, no watch is an investment - buy it and enjoy it. Flip it and lose a bit. That's life!!

I've lost on all of them... at the same time new to the watch world. I was eager to service them and when I didn't want them anymore, I couldn't get the $$ back on it.

I learned since then, only service the recent acquistion (preowned) if you know you are going to keep it.

Break, even will be great, depending on what you paid for it.Thas why its so important to get a good deal on purchase.I bought new fron AD,but at an substantial discount.

I guess thats why Rolex is so popular. It has a value, anywhere in the world. If I sell it in a few years time and there's a little loss,so what ? I still had the enjoyment of wearing it for a few years. If I get 80% back after 5 years, its great !!

Not quite true. The Daytona still is and probably will alwas stay an investment, but also it is the ONLY current Rolex model that is so

Now, if you go just a bit back, many Rolex vintage models sure a one heluva investment.

I haven't sold any Rolexes but just the same if I sold my 5513 sub that I paid $525 for in 1978 I obviously make a killing. On the other hand selling my 1-1/2year old YGDD I don't want to know the loss I'd take. In general I don't think you will have a profit selling any watch. Possibly a sub or daytona that one bought a a good price at one time. Otherwise it's a loser.

Good advice. The enjoyment I get out of them makes up for any potential loss. I sold my Air King and donated all the money from the sale except $500 to charity.

Depends on whether you buy to sell, or to wear, and location is the most important.
Certain countries you can find Paul Newmans for instance at VERY cheap prices.
I know several people who trade in Rolex and travel all over the world for them. But that is not really your question is it
The more you buy in USA or Europe the less profit or even losses you will make.
Countries that used to be rich (can even be 50 - 100 years ago) and now have fallen victim to depressions are the best bet to encounter sleepers.

My car is now worth 35% of its original purchase price as a trade in.Its 4.5 years old.If I can get 70-80% back on a Rolex, thats 6 years old,its clear, that Rolex is a much better buy.Ad to that, the fact that the longer you keep the Rolex the more money you get back, the longer you keep the bloody car,the less you get back ...

I made £1500 gbp on my 3 year old Steel Daytona when I sold it.
I wore it and enjoyed it and made $3000 great
It is a shame I couldn't buy and sell one a week at that mark up

It is a hobby for me. I am happy to break-even or incur a small loss. I never made money seling a Rolex, but I made money selling other models, ie. Panerai.

This is the best way to go. I buy all mine with the hope I will never have to sell. I have sold a few but plan on keeping the ones I have for a very long time.

Even though I lost money on one I sold, I enjoyed it much more than the money I lost, and that is the important thing.

But it is also good to know that you always have an asset when you have a Rolex.

Not sure I agree with this....

I gave $500 for an Air King. It has 2 months wear on is since its last visit to an RSC. Used AK's are going for $1500-2000 USD.

Sounds like a potential profit if I wanted to sell. Of course, 17 years have elapsed since I bought it.

Based on my eBay research (yeah, I know about eBay's problems), the Tudor Chrono that I paid $1100 for in 1996 would probably bring $2500-3000. Again, sounds like I could make a dime or two if I decided to sell.

If you hang on to them for a while before you flip (and keep it in good shape), it's not a money loser.

remmeber the lady dj?

Well, I paid a little over 2 Grand helping a friend and I listed on this site and ebay and wound up selling it for $1600+. The Oyster Perpetual with the 1030 movement was purchased for 850 and sold for 930 on ebay. Rolexes in general are great watches to experience and hold. Its purely a hobby. I do the same thing with Professional Radio Control motors etc. You want to go faster and have stories to tell to others
