YG Rolex or WG Lange?

I've had my eye on these two pieces for a while and an opportunity has come up to get one or the other (for now). Which would you get first and why? Here are a few considerations:

- I want both watches eventually
- YG vs WG
- ZW is 3x the cost of 116718
- Never tried on ZW (nearly impossible availability)
- ZW styling is polarizing
- I have the SS 116710
- 116718 is LOUD which is fine
- These are my "fun" watches

They clearly both make a statement. While the Lange design is unique its a bit too weird for my taste. Not a big fan of the maxi case Rolexes, but between the two I would get the GMT-c but with the green dial.

The finishing and the exclusivity does it for me, and you can always find a 116718 later on.

Did you consider the Richard Lange ?
A bit cheaper than the Rolex and imo a nicer Lange

I've been looking at the ALS Datograph Flyback recently (which I think you also have) and have also tried on the Zeitwerk. Both are absolutely works of art

The only thing holding me back is the depreciation which is fairly serious if bought new..... and even though I never sell or flip any of my watches, it would just annoy me to know its worth 20% less almost the moment you leave the store......

I've lost enough money on cars over the years to start doing the same on my watches.....

Although if I was going for a YG Rolex, I would look at a vintage nipple dial Sub

IMO that Lange is not a nice looking watch,the Rolex is.

These two watches are SO different I don't think there's a fair point of comparison.

The Rolex is a classic that you're going to see (relatively speaking) everywhere. The ZW is as rare as hens teeth and that's never going to change. You would be lucky to see another in your lifetime in the wild.

The ZW wears smaller than you imagine, but it's still a big and heavy watch. More like a platinum Panerai Luminor if you want a comparison.

I tried on a ZW the other day and while is a very clever watch it does nothing for me. I would look closer to the ground. Saxonia Annual Calendar, Richard Lange are both beautiful discreet pieces that you could wear anywhere and no one would notice them.

When it comes to movement sophistication and finishing Lange is streets ahead of Rolex, as they should be with price differentials like that.

I'm a Die-Hard Rolex fan but Lange is amazing.

That Lange is very unique I never saw anything like it in my life. But, all gold Rolexes are a grail of mine personally, so I would choose the all gold GMT.

Also, I though the all gold GMT's had a green date? The picture you show has a black date. Maybe an expert can chime in here and give me some advice?

Keep the comments coming! I'm a little surprised that Lange is leading slightly on a Rolex form. I should mention that I wear an A. Lange & Sohne platinum Datograph Flyback in addition to the SS Rolex 116710 GMTIIc.





I recognize the wildly different merits of each and the price difference. I imagine the ZW wears much like the Dato (smallish at 39mm and heavy). I haven't seen many 116718's in the wild. I'd probably release my SS if I got the YG version - pretty easy to pick up again if I change my mind. I'm not trying for low-key with these watches (I've got plenty of unassuming pieces to go under radar). I'd like this to be my extroverted time piece until I can get the funds together for that RM11 FM Flyback Chrono .

Personally I'd go for the Lange and would grab a SS GMT2c to flip when you go for the all gold version.

The Datograph has to be my favourite watch in the world, an impossibly beautiful movement, and a really appealing dial. Of the two, I would choose the Zeitwerk, it's a really unusual watch

The ALS is a super duper special watch. The Rolex is a cal. 31xx encased in gold; kinda boring IMO.

If you have a Dato why not sell it and put that and the cash towards the Dato Double Split? Or think about a Langematik Perpetual.

Hi Mike, hope all is well on your side... Ok, the Lange is in a class by itself, however, I have to stay faithful to my modern day grail and say that the 116718 is the piece to get... The new clasp on the Oysterlock bracelet evokes enthusiam, it's simple to operate, beautiful and secure, you have a 116710 so you already know... Main difference on the 116718 is the weight! Despite the weight, it feels very comfortable on the wrist! Ah what the heck here are some pics for you to consider! Good luck with your ultimate decision!
