Gold 1950 GMT 8 Day
I went to Hawaii in june/july and there was a watch store I would walk past everyday that had a PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 GMT pam289 / 8day in the window. I kept looking at it and have wanted one since. And I dont have a gold watch and have always wanted 1 (rose or yellow).
I really like the face on the "marina" model, they call it carbon fiber, not sure if it is. But I admire the 8 day and especially the 10 day power reserve models. Always thought that was pretty cool, I dont know many other watches that have that length of a power reserve. Ive been looking into the movements. I know some use a zenith and some are in-house. Anyone have any input about the different movements and models? one thing is that I see so many Panerai for sale here and on rolex forums which made me wonder, why are there so many for sale? I also feel stupid, but there is the seconds dial on the side, the hour and minute hand but what is the arrow hand for? I tried this one on today. It is a pre-owned at a store in BH. |

Well the watch is a GMT.
The arrow would show 24 hour time on the bezel I guess but I don't see any markings? Is it a 12 hour GMT movement? Nice hunk of Au.

Essentially, this is the gold version of the stainless steel 233. It's not terribly clear from the pics, but there is a 'dot' day/night indicator within the seconds sub-dial.
This was later changed to an AM/PM indicator on both the 289 and 233. Some people prefer the earlier 'dot' as it gives the dial a cleaner look. Hopefully googling for images will make all of this clearer(!)

Yes Clive I see it now. A twelve hour GMT hand with an AM/PM indicator.
I will come with instructions.

As mentioned, both 289/233 use the 2002 movement; the 1st in-house movement. My 233 is an 8-day, but it gets 10 days before requiring a full wind. The small hand is the gmt, which can be hidden behind the hour hand when not in use, which imo is a pretty neat feature. Based on the photo, the gmt is reflecting 12:00 midnight, because the dot is black.

Its a GMT........what do you mean "what is the arrow for"?????? Its for another time zone.........buy a watch in which you understand what functions are available and how they work. Its a beauty but there are a ton of better looking gold watches than this one.

I understand its functions, its basic. I just didnt know that 1. I love the 8 day power reserve and I like that it looks like a brick of gold. What other gold watches do you think look better? |

1) Not everyone knows how all watches operate. 2) He is not buying the watch - RTT. 3) There are not many watches that look better but that is my opinion.

THANKS! a nice guy! Understand most functions of watches but never had a GMT and didnt know what it stood for as ignorant as that makes me sound.
I think the gold is gorgeous. Thick watch like that in gold looks fantastic. |
