I actually feel sorry for the unions on this one, Joyce is an attention seeker trying to look tough, and is shooting himself in the foot while he does it.

This has been stewing for a few months, and I'm not surprised by this turn of events..and possibly the first grounding I'm aware of for Qantas!?!?
Unfortunate for the general public...
I hope it's sorted out come Jan, as I'm already booked on internal flights..

I've stopped using Qantas when Virgin came into the scene. Reasons are as follows:
Crappy service, rude staff, crappy food and never on time when leaving or arriving.

So as far as Im concerned, Qantas is its own worst enemy!

Don't hold back your true feelings John!!

I do know what you mean however....Virgin has always been for the most part a great upcomming airline. It is not immune from poor service at times either though.
All airlines have their pros and cons. It's when the schedules of family holidays and the like are thrown into kaos, that's a real concern!

I hope the parties involved can rectify their differences soon, before the government steps in anyway!!

My friend you know I am never the diplomat!

I had a few times that virgin stuffed up, however, they did they best to fix. For example, my tv would not work, they gave me portable unit and the food/drinks I ordered were on them to make up for any inconvinience. If that was Qantas, tough luck!

I hope Qantas sorts everything out as its becoming a national disgrace and the poor travelers are the people that suffer in the end.

Was just watching news on a Greek Channel here in Australia at my parents place, and they had a report on the Qantas fleet been grounded. The issue is obviously known worldwide. This is a national disgrace!

Yep...I've been reading it on Canadian news as well!
Funny thing (not really), is the Canadian carrier, Air Canada, is also going through a similar situation...
It's not looking good for me!

If Air Canada is going through similar issues, I hope their management do not react like the Aussies have.

It seems Rob you will be in the unknown until you have boarded and you are actually flying here.

My parents are in Sydney atm, they booked down and back on Virgin so they're fine there, but my aunt was just allowed some time at home from her cancer treatment, and they were planning on heading to Adelaide to visit her since she hasn't seen them in ages. Now that's not going to happen because of all this crap.

Absolute nightmare for all traveling....

Qantas domestic have always been pretty good but on our recent international flights we were disappointed by their service. Not what it used to be.

Rob...I'm sure this'll be sorted by the time you guys hop on!

Is the crews on strike due to outsourcing or?

It was on my morning paper here in Helsinki today too. So it seems as the works knows about it.

Why the wording "grounds"... I mean grounding a fleet is usually linked to poor maintenance or following an accident?

I would advise people with Qantas frequent flyer points to spend them asap. The reputational damage to this iconic brand is I'm afraid quite irreversible. I had 200k points with Ansett and that all went to puff. :(

Ansett wasn't all that far off this in some ways, my mother and her friends were Ansett hostesses and it was a dream job, best hotels everywhere, limo transfers to and from the airport, and she spent 5 years on standby at full pay, working about 20 days a year just to meet safety requirements. I got to see the world for nothing as a little kid at Ansett's expense. If that culture still exists at Qantas today, I can understand why management won't tolerate it any longer, as well as why the staff won't give it up.

71% pay increase for Mr. Joyce. That's nice, I'll never understand the thinking of these corporations living off the back of their workers and pulling stunts like this.

Our CEO made 18 million in 2010 after laying off thousands of workers, the same workers who came in everyday to keep the company afloat so he can make his 18 million.

They are told to end the hostilities and resume flying.
So hopefully they will start flying later today.

I'm watching their stock today. If it drops further I may buy on the hope of a takeover.

It's all good, don't go throwing the baby out with the bath water.

It was a good strategic move by Qantas.

Back to normal now.

One thing we've all had to learn in recent years with the global economy is that things like this tend to have ripple effects all over the world. So I hope they get it sorted quickly because honestly, the rest of the world can't take too many more hits.

I wouldn't necessarily say it was a good strategic move, unless Joyce intends switching to Virgin at some point.

Yes i full back Joyce on this one. Stop this farce now. 2 days, and its over. rather than these day by day rolling strikes, delays, cancellations effecting everyone. Well done Joyce, beat these bully unions.
