I'm jumping off this crazy train.......
I'm done. Finished. I can't take it anymore. I have flipped my last watch and I am happy about it. I have owned everything I care to own in the Rolex line up and I am done. Seriously.
I just sold my 214270 that I bought 10 days ago for a V serial nearly new 114270 that will be here tomorrow. This makes Rolex number 10 for me in the last 20 months and I will now kick back and enjoy my watch without lusting for another any longer. Why did I sell my 214270 after 10 days you ask? Well, the same reason I sold the last one I had for only a week and the same reason I sold my two Sub Cs. I don't like all the changes that have been made. Just like I can't get past the lugs on the Sub C, I can't get past the short minute hand, the matte dial or the non lumed/painted 3,6,9 on the new Explorer. I have tried and tried and tried...........................I shouldn't have to TRY so hard to actually like a watch. I should love it with no explanations nor should I have to convince myself. I liked the GMTIIC I had but I learned that I don't like PCLs no matter how hard I try to convince myself. I have had THREE 14060Ms. I love this watch; it was my first Rolex and is still my 2nd favorite watch of all time. However, I am a one watch guy and I wanted something a little dressier, yet sporty. If I was a 2 watch guy, I would still have one. What fits all my criteria as a "one watch guy"? The 36MM Explorer 114270. My only reservations I have had with this watch was the size. However, I have been trying on a lot of similar sized watches lately and remembering the one I owned for 3 days, I can honestly say it works. It is actually WHAT I WANT. I DONT want a ginormous watch. I want something that is classic, durable and simple. I've heard it called the stealth Rolex. I think that is accurate. I feel that the 36MM Explorer has probably the best dial ever made by Rolex. Perfect symmetry. I feel Rolex just crapped all over the place when they made the 39MM Explorer. The new supersized watches Rolex has produced have lost something. And listening to everyone gush over the new models has made me feel that it is time to enjoy what I have and realize Rolex is going in a different direction than me. And thats ok. I'm moving my watch passion more to the inner workings of the watch than just what they look like on the outside and a cursory understanding on what goes on inside. That is where I will be focusing the energy I used to use on finding the perfect watch for me. Yet a final reason, the 36MM works for me, my little girl has shown an interest in watches. I can leave my Explorer to her when I am done on this earth and she will have grown up watching me wear it and it will look as good on her as it does on me. So this is yet another chapter in my watch journey. Thanks for listening and I look forward to listening to everyone elses journey and continuing to share this crazy passion. Free beers in JJs Bar. My lovely old blusterer of an uncle came to tea the other day wearing his equally old and knackered Explorer I.
I commented on it and he said simply: (and I'm paraphrasing here) "What, this old thing. It's been pretty much round the World with me God Knows how many times, it's been under water in a submarine, under water without a submarine and I've tried to break it, intentionally and unintentionally more times than I care to remember but the bugger keeps on ticking. I think that makes it an OK watch." He slurped his tea contentedly. I smiled and hid my blingy, big Sub ND. It doesn't happen often but on this occasion it had clearly been out classed. Good luck, I hope this time it works. |

Watch shopping meets philosophy. Should you do what you should, when you should, or do what you want, when you want?
Kudos on finding some answers and a great watch... |

Who are you kidding, Dan? You know the lack of a date feature will be bothering you by Friday and have looking for your next purchase!
Congrats on your enlightenment...

Well done Dan, I respect your decision. I often think about going back to simpler times when I wore a 14060 daily and found myself happy.
I have gone threw every single Rolex sport watch over the years and I can tell you that the classic sub {14060}, and the classic Sea Dweller were probably my two most favorite Rolex watches. If you can find contentment with one watch, you have won the game. So many people lose their way with material objects, it's nice to hear a story when someone figures it all out and realises what is important. You daughter will love the Explorer, and every scratch and ding you put on it will be a memory of you.

I've been there with the one watch thing. Hope it works for you, but when you get that itch come back, it's bloody hard to ignore.

Great great great!
I am down to 2 and am seriously thinking about making my Explorer II White be my only/everyday watch. I've posted this a couple times now. Harder to do than expected... I definitely don't lust after any of the new ones....Rolex is missing the mark in my opinion as well. Congrats on not having to worry about this silly problem we call collecting watches!! |

Dan, I admire your will power in being a "One Watch guy". I, for one, can't do it. I know I can't.
Good luck to you, my friend! Worse case, let us know what the next one will be. |

Cool. I am almost there ... my Sub C LV is my almost only watch ... my old 16570 sits in the safe most of the time ... I might want to trade that one for the new Explorer but we'll see. I don't see myself getting anything else, as much as I'd like a TT GMT ...
