Value of a vintage lady's Gruen Gold?
Gents:
My wife is cleaning out the bedroom, and came across a lady's gold Gruen (u/k) how much gold, but there are apparent hallmarks in the metal on the reverse. The bezel has stone chips; my dad's diamond tester seems to indicate the presence of diamond. Its a Gruen quartz, in good clean shape from what I can see, and a scan is included. Any ideas on value of this piece? Thanks all, Chris |

I would hesitate to give a value for this watch. Value on older watches is always based on demand, availability, and condition.
Not sure there is a high demand for this particular ladies watch, however the condition appears to be good, pre 1976 would probably be more valuable than post 1976. Gruen stopped making it's very well regarded mechanical watches in 1958 and sold the name and precision facilities. Gruen Industries reorganized in 1958 and changed over to quartz movements until 1976 when the company again was sold. The 1958 to 1976 era are quality watches, the company failed through bad financial decisions and not by faulty products. A quartz movement would probably still be a swiss movement although not actually made by the Gruen family. Gruen quartz watches were sold in fine department stores and jewelery stores throughout the US and the diamonds were genuine as this was before the Zirc era. Gruen watches can still be found, although I'm not sure who does the actual manufacturing, and are marketed by the M.Z. Berger Company NY. |

Thanks Larry, a great deal of info.
I kniow value is based on what someone is willing to pay, but before I go any further, I thought I'd check with you lads and see what the buzz is. Thanks again, Chris |
