What's considered overpolishing? Keep or flip?
Hi guys, I just got myself a W series Exp2. When acquiring it I noticed a some overpolishing on the lower right lug, but as I was deeply poisoned I went ahead and completed the transaction.
Now Im experiencing some sort of emotion that I can only term "I like it so much I want it to be fine?" Just wanted everyone's opinion on how bad is this? Is it a cause for flipping or is are the lugs still considered robust? Btw I just checked at my local AD and their current stock of 16570 is being sold at retail price fixed (no disc) so theres no way im buying a brand new one. If there lugs are crappy could the more experienced forumers give me some pointers on how to identify overpolishing? I mean the watch case in general looks pretty good to me. I have attached pictures in natural daylight and yellow light. Thanks in advance guys! |

Once the chamfers are gone they are gone! It does look somewhat over polished but if I were you I would just enjoy it and forget about it. Remember the only way to find a never polished watch is buying new, NOS or from the original owner stating that the watch was never serviced. IMHO the watch still looks really nice!

Gosh - someone got a new polishing wheel that's for sure.
Same as Submarino really - Either see it as a unique piece and enjoy it for what it is - after all, it's still a very handsome Rolex - or - if it's getting to you (in honesty I think it would me) - cut your losses and move on to another. One thing - I would say that's damage not just over-polishing. If it was done by a professional I wonder on the possibility of a claim for damage/ Insurance job, etc, IF you can persuade the seller to play ball with you on that. Just an idea. |

The lower right lug seems overly rounded. If it bugs you, just flip it. You'll never really be comfortable with the watch. Life's too short. Look on the FS forums as they come up often and for much better asking prices than at an AD.

It will not alter the robustness or durability of the watch: so if it doesn't bother you, keep it!

Some skilled watchmakers can get the chamfered edges back but when the watch has been "Filed-Down" no point.

I guess I don't stare at my watch as much as everyone else does. It wouldn't bother me, I'd wear it and enjoy it

Thanks guys for the comments. I'm leaning towards keeping it and wearing it as a beater. Wonder if someone can enlighten me, if you get a replacement case from Rolex Service Centre, how much does that cost for a 16570? And the serial number will be different?
How does that affect the current provenance of the watch, like previous servicing papers and warranty cards? |

Make sure the RSC paperwork for case replacement stays with the watch.

up to you
I've sure seen worse. This kind of thing only matters if it matters to you. No one else will ever notice, and you've got a great watch.
It could be that a skilled person can bring this case back to something that looks like new. If the last polishing didn't remove too much steel, the crisper look look of the chamfers might still be possible. |

This non polished thing is so overrated, I can understand it when looking for top museum vintages but for daily awarded, overrated.

1)i would flip it.... it would drive me mad. 2)beater: i think a brand new rolex was meant to be a beater thats why i went with the brand. a beater for me is the watch you polish with your sweat by wearing it during life. 3)I Just purchased a new "case frame" recently.....you won't believe the price... not an option....upwards of $2000 lesson learned, flip and make a purchase next time that hits your new requirements. or just keep it, but since it bugged you so much that you posted it, it doesn't seem like your going to not notice it.

Hopefully you now know not to swallow that poison again ..... If you notice anything about a potential watch purchase that's not right or just feels wrong it's never too late to walk away. If the lug bothers you enough to start this thread then I think you already have your answer about keeping or flipping. Service case will cost more than flipping. Good luck.

I'd cut my losses and flip it. Sounds like it's going to bother you.
A large % of the preowned Rolexes that come up for sale on the forums & that I see in jewelry stores have this same issue. I guess thats a compelling argument for the thicker lugs in the subc and gmt2c. |

They all have something...
You can continue searching for one in "better shape" but realistically most used watches have some sort of blemish. After a while you wont be staring at the lugs all the time, beacuse you will just be admiring your awesome Rolex.
And just beacuse you noticed it was a bit overpolished and started this thread does not mean that you wont get over it, trust me the joy of owning and wearing that watch will make you forget about all the small nuances it may have. I would say just keep it and enjoy it...... |
