I'm sitting in a BMW dealership today...

I'm sitting in a BMW dealership today, jeans and a tshirt awaiting my once a year free oil change. I noticed this older gentlemen sitting next to me waiting as well and he is wearing a GMT with a faded bezel. I couldn't help myself so I we got talking about the car service and the wait etc. I looked over at his watch and said have you ever sent that to Rolex for service? To make a long story short. He said he paid 289.00 for it in 1974 I think, some port in Japan at the military base store. He said he's had it serviced every 4-5 years and it's on bezel number 3. He noticed my watch as well and we had a good chat but I couldnt help but think about how much he paid vs. how much I paid for mine. the faded bezel looked great, I should have made him an offer on it!

I bought my Sub in 1976 for something around $400. I couldn't tell you how many bezels or dials it had in it before it was stolen a little over a year ago. I can tell you that over the years, I spent several times what I paid for it in service fees.

I always enjoy talking with others about their Rolex. Most are quite nice about it and have a pretty good story to go along with it.

I bought a Daytona 6239 for $175... worked for Bailey Banks and Biddle
as part time help and got it for cost less 30% but no BMW for me back then
I had a red cabrio Triumph TR4
Both objects did very well through the years
The Rolex...6239 currently selling for $25.000-40,000 and the TR4 for $20.000-25,000..

I bet the TR4 didn't cost you only $175 though.

Am I the only one that wouldn't dare ask a man that had a watch for 30 years...took care of it too for 30 years and ask him to SELL IT TO ME?

agreed. well, partially.

as for what was paid in 1974, 'What cost $289.00 in 1974 would cost $1263.18 in 2011'

give more than take..

All good stories and this make me mad evertime I see the original receipts for the Rolex timepieces my dad has purchased many years ago... Only if he would have purchased a 1655 when it was selling for $1,000 when no one wanted it... Oh the agony

I wouldn't neither but I think people who made that suggestion were kidding more than saying that seriously.

That was a great story as well! I like to hear my grandfather telling me how he used to buy jewelry for almost nothing back in the days (although it was still a lot of money for him at the time).

I would also bet that the TR4 is a pile of rust by now. (Disclaimer: Unless the OP has kept it all this time, in which case it's probably immaculate.)

I wish they were still that cheap. That is great stuff, and what a great item to pass down to the kids.
