I search a small nice city in the US or Canada which is away from metropolis for a short holiday (1 or 2 weeks). I am single and I like it to stroll, drink coffee, eat,... Only relaxing... (no hookers)

"Nice" means good archictecture and old buildings, cultivated cityscape, pleasant atmosphere, not crowded and affordable.

In short, a kind of an insider tip.


Who can recommend me such a city or place?

It's going to be hard to find what you're looking for outside of a metro area.
I might suggest Ottawa (Canada's Capitol w/old world charm) and Quebec City (oldest city in N. America I believe). These are two great destinations with charm, friendly people (it helps to know some French in Quebec) and great architecture.

I highly recommend Victoria, British Columbia, Canada if your trip will be in between Late May - September. It has everything you want, is easy to get to and offers tons of day or side trip options.

Nice choices. If the OP is going to be here for at least a week he could visit both.
I don't think there is enough to do in Savannah to last more than a 3-4 days though.

Check out Murphys CA. It's in the Sierra Nevada's of California, it's a very small town, lots of restaurants and wineries, and several other small towns within a 20 minute drive.

X2 Stay in Charleston and visit Savannah since it's only a 45 min drive. Both are great historic areas.

I would shoot myself if I spent more than 1 day in St. Augustine.

I think that you should do a mix of New Orleans and Ft. Lauderdale beaches -
i.e. a two stop deal. prob 4 days in Lauderdale and 3 in N.O.

For 1-2 weeks you need something slightly bigger. Washington, DC is a great place if you haven't been. Or San Francisco with some tours along the coast and Napa Valley.

If you want your socks knocked off by geographic beauty (not so much the architecture) - I'd highly recommend Sedona, Arizona. Stunning Red Rocks area. Lots of outdoor-adventure activities. Laid back people. Peaceful. You can get lost in nature and it's no so far or so expensive to get back to a larger town or city again (Vegas, Taos, Santa Fe or even head to California for bigger cities.) Rent a car (convertible) or a bike and enjoy!

My Vote goes to Canada's East coast; it is cheap, not busy and really nice. There is a lot to see and do. My sister lives in Halifax and I go there at least once a year. P.E.I is nice it is only 3 hours drive from Halifax. If you want any info send me a PM and I give you some info.

(we have been to a few German Christmas markets a few years ago... that was "quite interesting" to say the least )
