Vintage Rolex?
Hi,
Are there any people on here who are really into vintage Rolex? Seems to me that almost everything on here is about new or less than 5 year old ones. |

I like a handful of vintage watches, and PLENTY of our fellow members have excellent vintage collections. Mike's got pretty much every SS sport Rolex ever made!

There are indeed a few "vintage" pieces or recent classics abound.
There are other forums dedicated purely to vintage and I think the vintage nuts tend to gravitate towards those forums

Everybody knows Time Zone but I do not like it that much for the same reasons and their lay out is really bad imo.

Go here,
http://www.network54.com/Forum/207593/ Wonderfull gentlemen with some real experts on all things Rolex vintage! The dial section alone is worth the price of admission. And yes I tend to prefer the older references. This was a different era where watches really were used as part of necessary equiment for a specific task and were treated as such. My favorites have always been the GMT family and the Subs. While I'm fortunate to have examples of both vintage and modern, vintage is where my heart is. I guess being the orginal owner of some they don't really seem that old to me. My humble group, |

I am a vintage owner and lover. I mentioned $2500 for a Submariner at a nearby pawnshop that specializes in genuine rolex and a fellow memeber mentioned yeah if its 10-20 years old. I would agree the majority mostly buy Brand New and 5 years at a minimum.

while I do agree that the MAIN beauty and charm of the YM lies in that beautiful, solid gold BEZEL, the BLUE dial cannot compare with the BLUE of the SUB!!
Gotta agree with ya there JJ. The dial on the Blue Sub is simply one of a kind. Can never be properly duplicated in any way. Its the most beautiful shade of blue I have ever seen. |

Wow!! But one missing
Mike: that is a fantastic collection. There's one missing (not that I can really say that such a collection is in any way deficient).
I've seen a few pics of an older Exp II. The bezel markings are more subtle, and it has an orange 24-hour hand. Anyone have one in white? |

I believe you're speaking of the reference 1655. Released circa 1971 till about 84-85. The 1655 was released as a watch used by those involved in cave exploration. The reference used the same 1575 movement as the GMT, but with a unique "orange" 4th hand. The use of a larger hand was said to have been done because of increased visability in adverse conditions. Not very popular during it's run the 1655 has become a grail to many collectors. The watch was only released with a black face. The white Exp II did not debut untill the introduction of the 16550. Noteworthy; their were 16550s released that had the dials turn a "cream" color. Some feel this was caused by a defect in the paint mix used at the time. Orginally many collectors would only seek those "creams" bearing a rail dial, but it seems creams now are accepted with a non-rail configuration. I did, in fact have a 1655 at one time. It now resides in a good home with another collector, I've always thought the 16550 cream was a lovely watch! Not my Photo, |

That's the one!! I think it's very unique, though I'm drawn to the white face as it really dresses up the watch. I'll stick to the black face for the sub-date (which I should be getting in 2-3 weeks!!). I guess I'll "settle" for the newer white Exp-II when the time comes.
