Torn between New GMT IIc or V-series preowned Daytona
Hi All,
With my 50th birthday fast approaching (Feb 8) I am still torn between a new GMT IIc or a preowned V-series Black Faced Daytona with the newer clasp. This will be my 4th Rolex joining two DJ TT & a Serti Subby. Now I know it is all personal preference, I am well aware of the pros and cons of both watches and believe I would be happy with either...however, having said that, I would hate to have buyers remorse after the purchase. Since I regularly rotate my watches, neither watch will be an everyday watch I don't think the fact the Daytona has no date would be a big issue. I can't get away from the fact that the Daytona is still tough to find new at dealers and very desireable. The new GMT IIc is also a beauty, and easier to obtain as most AD's have them new and many TRF sellers have them. I admit, I like having items that are "tougher" to find making them a little more exclusive. Will I be using the functions of either watch? Probably not, heck I don't dive with my Subby so I doubt I would use the timer on the Daytona or the 2nd time on the GMT. Yes, I am well aware there are bigger problems in this wicked wicked world, and this issue is not one of them, but isn't that why we have this forum? Anyway, I would still love any input, particularly from those owners who have both watches. Happy Holidays to all and thank you in advance for your thoughts. |

gmt!!
Here is my Christmas present. I love it. I have a 6263 daytona, but have been eyeing this for 2 years now. Finally, I am a happy owner! I had to show off my new baby too!

I don't own neither of those but I'd like to share my opinion if you don't mind.
Given your current collection, I believe you have three watches that are quite different despite the fact that you own two Datejusts (I think the leather band makes quite a difference in between the two of them). Having said that, my preference would be the Daytona because it would look more different and unique in your collection than a GMT-II (and I'm saying this even if I prefer the GMT). As well, you added that you liked rarer watches and I think the Daytona would fall in that category more than a GMT you can and will be able to find in AD's and on the second hand market for many years to come. Sorry for the long post, whichever you buy will be a fabulous choice anyway, just make sure you take your time when choosing and you will never regret it!

I'd go Daytona for the reasons you mentioned and given that you said you wouldn't miss the date. I have one on the way right now myself, except it's a white face!

I would go for the gmt for a few reasons. 1. It has a date 2. It has wider lugs giving it the appearance of a larger case 3. I would disagree with saying the daytona is rare, go on eBay and see for yourself there are a lot more daytonas for sale than there are ceramic gmts and 4. The BRAND new gmt can be bought for LESS than the USED daytona. The gmt also feels great on the wrist. I vote gmt but both are great choices, good luck!

The Daytona is more exclusive than the GMT2-C, but it's not that hard to find one these days.

I have and really like both watches. Having said that I would go Daytona, It is my clear favorite.
BTW, I actually like not having to set the date when I haven't worn it in a while :) |

i like the gmt more but in your case you should get the daytona.
its good to have it in rotation as a luxury watch (especially for 50) since the gmt is still considered a tool watch. |

The daytona Is awsome but i would choose the gmt because its new and would complement your callection better... The gmt Is big and rugged unlike your dj s and subby...

Well IMHO you made the right choice there is only one Rolex Daytona and thats the vintage ones.Myself not a fan of the modern Daytona line up just don't like the bezel and dial layout.l Now a modern day Daytona with a dial and black aluminium insert like say the 6263 IMHO that would be a very nice watch. The GMTc is a very good watch one of the best that Rolex has brought out since introduction of the 3 series movements in 1988/9.

I think that the Daytona would complement your current collection. The GMT II is generally similar to the Submariner in appearance. The Daytona would give you a different look and a different vibe.

Either way you can't go wrong, both are extremely nice watches. I have both and you may find you eventually do the same as well. For me the GMTIIC is something I wear more often and I wear the Daytona for more special occasions.

I would go for the GMT all day long. It just shouts to me when the Daytona doesn't. I prefer buying new too.
But, ultimately, you have to decide which grabs you harder.... Nice decision to have to make though!

For me- Daytona. With that said get whichever one you feel sings to you the most. It doesn't matter much what we think as it won't be on our wrists. In the end it is a good place to be though because either way you can't really go wrong.

Depends on what functions you could use. The GMT would be much more easier to read the time.

I am not a fan of the Daytona's look, but I have to agree with others who have mentioned that the sub and gmt are very similar and a Daytona would add some diversity to your collection!
You will probably be quite pleased with either! |

The Daytona. It's an amazing watch. I have owned several Rolex's but the Daytona was a whole different feeling. All the best.

Exactly, well said. I plan on doing similar with my daytona. It's just too tough to read and the chrono is worthless, to me. But I have enjoyed wearing it over the years.

As a new SS Daytona black dial owner and self confessed timing everything/ anything idiot, yes the Daytona is a pain in the a$$ to read, especially coming from a Speedmaster Pro.
It took me around three weeks to get use to the Daytona chrono sweep hand and sub dials, no more reading the timing functions at a glance, it just takes a second or three longer. More time spent taking in the beauty of the dial, lol. I have been a Daytona "fanboy" since the early 70's when AD's could'nt give them away, believe it or not, and of course being an older man now wearing bifocals fulltime may make all the difference. |
