Sears
In my humble opinion Sears isn't long for this world, not when they are seeing additional competition from Wal-Mart, Target Sam's, Costco, Penny's, Macy's, Home Depot, Lowe's and well you get the picture.
My question is, when was the last time you were in a Sears store ?? |

Sears is ok but the merger/takeover of Kmart was a mess.... There's a K mart near us that was changed to a "Sears Essentials" which is basically a Kmart that carries Sears tools and clothing. Not bad to have around. Not as cheap as walmart but they have stuff you need sometimes. Then they changed it back to Kmart. All the signs are Sears and they still sell Sears stuff.... but they won't take Sears returns and only honor some sale stuff and gift cards etc. They have no idea what they are doing now.......

P.S. Doesn't Sears own Kmart? I read somewhere that Sears is selling off or spinning off OSH hardware????
That should help keep them chugging along for a bit.

There are problems for sure. They have a great internet sales engine in Lands End. Kmart gave away profits last Qtr to get top line sales vs Walmart. Kmart has poor e-commerce potential.
Sears Craftsman brand is losing ground among professionals who are going with Snap-on and other higher end tool brands. Plus the e-commerce potential for tools is like shipping concrete - not economical alternative. In brick and mortar traffic, Sears is reducing its footprint faster than previously done. In past they would give a struggling store a year to turn things around - now it's produce or die within 90 days or so. Losing 50% in share value this year is poor performance, too. The two majority holders are probably lining up assets sales - closing the 100 odd stores only save $500mil in inventory and a little more in payroll/benefits.

I was in there the other day to pick up a stocking stuffer for my Father....and I used to work there when i was 17 or 18.
What bothers me about the place is the Bi-lingual department signs all over....call me what you want, but it's the US, keep the signs in English. My Father and his family had to learn English when he came here, why start accommodating now?

They lost "Sears Tower" to Willis.
It's all downhill now...

I just read in the local paper that they will be closing a bunch of Sears / K-Mart stores in my state very soon. This does NOT look good for Sears OR K-Mart.

I'm surprised at the comments; I know Sears has great tools, etc but I really thought it would be more like "2 years ago" was the resposnse I was expecting.
Sears is owned by a Private Equity Shop that also owns k-Mart and others. What does a private equity shop know about retail, right. 4 years ago they had earnings EBITDA of over $4 billion, today around 4300 million While I agree with everything Dan Peirce has to say, Dan you are wrong here...will go out of business....it will be a sad day as the happiest day when I was a kid was when the "wish book" showed up in the mail for the Holidays. |

I'd hate to see my source for Craftsman hand tools disappear.
Their power tools are another matter altogether. |

Uhh . . . lets look at this again.
They have about 4000 stores, and are closing maybe 200 max. What's that, 5%? Demographics change, and some stores might have to close. There is a 40,000 sq.ft. Sears Hardware store near here that carries just about everything you'd need for the home. The giant mall-style places, don't know too much about them, but they seem like dinosaurs. |

Sears Hardware stores left my area several years ago.
The Ace Hardware stores have recently started selling the Craftsman tools. |

I last went there a couple years ago to look for a new fridge. The sales people (if you were lucky to actually find one) were pretty unimpressive. I don't see myself returning any time soon.

FWIW, that is only 3% of their stores. There is still time, but their CEO needs to go. The K-Mart idea was horrible!

I go there for a few things. Just this month I lost my dishwasher and clothes dryer. I got the replacements at Sears. The service and pricing was good. I like Kenmore products. (Whirlpool made?) I'll be sorry if they go. I have a lot of Craftsman tools. There heritage is unmatched. There are a few turn of the century Sears Victorian home packages that were built in my town.
