IWC Portuguese Automatic 7 day

I am looking for any helpful advice on the IWC Auto 7 day in black. I wear a suit every day for work however I am in my jeans when I get home and typically don't get too dressed up on the weekends. With that being said, do any of you think this watch is too dressy for casual wear? Lastly, does anyone have an opinion on the watch looking too big as well with essentially not having a bezel on the watch. I am looking for a classic timepiece that will stay in style for very long time. Thanks again for any help. I really appreciate it!

Not too dressy, you'll be fine. The lack of bezel will naturally show more wear and it is only waterproof to 30m so it isn't exactly a sport watch. No lume also.

Thank you for all of your responses. I didn't even think about the idea of the dial receiving far more abuse without having a bezel. Can anyone explain of how "tough" these dials really are in everyday situations. And if they do need to be changed, can anyone give me an idea of how much a new dial costs. Thanks again!

I've had one for the last 7 yrs ref 5001-07 and it goes well with suits or jeans. I have a 7" wrist and it wears very nicely!

I am not the most careful watch wearer but the crystal is still flawless and there are only the typical "desk diving" marks mostly on the clasp. The only part of the watch showing some age is the strap.

I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the model.

Thanks everyone. I am guessing I may get a few biased responses, but I am looking for that watch that I can dress up with a suit or dress down with jeans. I am debating about trading my 3 month old Rolex Sub C for the IWC Portuese Automatic 7 day in black. I know the Sub C is probably the most versatile watch around, but is the IWC able to do that as well. I am 35 and I am looking for something a classic watch that I can have forever and will hopefully stay in style for years to come.

That sounds like a SubC! :-)

I have the silver/white dial 5001-07. Of all the SS models, I think the -9 is a little dressier than than the -7 but more casual than the -14. So yes it can be used for suits and jeans. However there isn't much contrast on the -09. It's also not a "do everything" watch like the SubC. I would advice that you keep your Sub and get a 3565-02 Portofino for a very similar look.

Here's my 5001-07 on a casual work Friday.

I'd be careful about the watch actually fitting under your shirt cuff, as you say you wear suits everyday. This thing sits like a 3 story house on your wrist. I think it's a beautiful dial, incredible movement, all around great package, but just way too thick for a suit. For any other wear though it would be awesome if you don't mind the height of the watch.

Go try it on (if you can) with the shirts you intend to wear during the day if you are concerned.

I heard the movement in these things really let the watch down due to terrible accuracy problems...do a google search on this before you buy. It put me off getting the 18CT gold version last month.

They've made some subtle improvements [to the movement] over the years to help with accuracy. Mine is now 4 months old (bought BNIB) and runs at +2 seconds a day. There was a subtle change in the caliber number as well.

The Portuguese Automatic, 5001, has been made with three movements:

cal 50010 > 2.5 Hz movement, 44 jewels
cal 51010 > 3.0 Hz movement, 44 jewels
cal 51011 > 3.0 Hz movement, modified cogging, 42 jewels + 2 beryllium bronze bearings

The changes didn't improve accuracy. All three movements are comparably accurate according to IWC.

The changes weren't advertised to improve accuracy, but anecdotally they have (or IWC has stepped up the regulation methods). I've read dozens of posts on various boards to this effect. Obviously, this isn't straight from IWC but if a small sampling of owners are to be believed the accuracy issues are long gone.

My older Big Pilot with the same fundamental movement is not as spot on. I'm not an accuracy zealot, however.

The white dial with blue hands is stunning!

I have a RG white dial port chrono and the Potugese line
is great for dress or casual. The only negatives with it as a
Daily wear for me are lack of WR (I swim often and don't like
to leave my watch in the locker) and the leather band. Water again
