Selling my old piece and getting a new watch!
Hi Guys and Gals,
As I am only a beginner in watch collecting, I just need some friendly advice! I am thinking about getting a Submariner as I am starting to admire how gorgeous it looks through the shop window and the watch looks amazing on my wrist. I am still not certain which one to go for especially the price difference between the ND sub and ceramic sub is more than £1000. Just wonder what is the advantage of the ceramic bezel? I am not to bother with the date function! I am thinking about selling my late 60s ss oysterdate model 1501 to fund this purchase. How much should I expect an authorised dealer will offer me? The watch had just been service by Rolex which include an overhaul and new crown. So I got the receipt but no box and papers! Many thanks for your help! Herbie |

Depending on condition and since it was serviced by Rolex I'd say $1250 to $1700...All depends on who wants it and how bad you want to sell it. That's just my guess seeing what's on eBay and again if you had a FULL Rolex Service. |

New sub with the ceramic dial is the way to go. Includes all the latest case, bezel, and bracelet upgrades! State of the Rolex art and well worth the extra $

Each watch has its own merits. You can't make a wrong decision with this one.

Either would be a wise choice, but I prefer the 14060M model with no date.
Can we see a picture of your OysterDate? That must be nice.

Gotta go Ceramic sub if you can. The adjustable buckle is so worth it. I wish I never parted with mine. Go Ceramic.

Either watch would be a great choice. The ceramic insert is supposed to be more scratch resistent, however then again if it were to crack it would be a whole lot more expensive to replace than the older aluminum insert. Besides the ceramic insert there are a number of other differences to include the case size, no lug holes, maxi dial, bracelet, and clasp. You just need to determine which one you prefer the most and if you are willing to pay more for the ceramic version.

I would go for the new ceramic sub easily best of the newer additions for me. I don't think you will get much from a dealer- as a trade in expect around £600. I would keep it as a dress watch - most of the UK AD's are doing 0% finance if you want to bridge the gap

No date sub. Easy. Not a fan of the ceramics. Bezel too expensive to replace if damaged. Like the classic looks of the 14060. Besides, original style case is just plain cool.

I prefer the 14060
Each has its own taste. I prefer the 14060. Even just a year ago I could get very lucky when I got a new 16610 Sub.Date from an authorized dealer now if I could get a GMT II Pepsi, Coke or Black new also buy it immediately. Besides these watches were worth less because the ceramic bezel is more expensive besides other improvements guess.
But like I said .. is a matter of taste. I love Rolex. |

don't part-ex the old Rolex as dealers will give you a poor deal - no AD will put that watch in their 2nd hand inventory - they will just sell on to another dealer you could try selling it on a respected forum like TZ-UK; or even consign it to a local auction house that does watch sales |

Many thanks for all the kind reply.
I actually feel a little bad selling this watch. This Rolex is my very first Rolex. It was a gift from my dad when I finished university. He bought the watch in the late sixties when his very first Rolex he bought for himself was stolen from him---he was mugged after he did a home visit to help an elderly patient in distress. I have a chat with him about selling the watch and he said sell it but please do lend him the new sub when he go partying! I think I will try ebay. If no luck, I will keep it and sell my Tudor Hydranault Prince Date instead! |

Keep it, or regret selling it in the future. I came very close to selling my first Rolex about 15 years ago and am so very thankful that I didn't go through with it.

I don't know how you can sell your father's watch. The market value is not significant and when the watch is gone, it's gone. All that is left is regret, and for very little money. Keep the gift and buy the new sub 116610LN. The no date you will regret in time.

So true. You may regret selling your old man's watch one day down the road. Keep it and save up for a new one.

Go into the AD and try on the 14060M and the 116610!
One of them will "sing" to you. So many different variables to consider, go with what your initial instinct tells you. Would recommend getting the Submariner before even considering selling your Dad's watch... |
