Rolex Day-Date II or Patek Philippe 5711 Nautilus

Lets assume that the price of these two watches are exactly the same which would you choose and why ?

pics of your PP Nautilus and Rolex DD pics greatly appreciated

That's a tough choice, and probably depends partially on what watches you currently have in your collection. That being said, between the two I'd go for the PP Nautilus. I'm not a big fan of the DDII, I think it's too big, especially the bezel, which just seem out of place to me.

Lets say it will be the only watch in your collection for at least the next 5 years

I just noticed that you list the YG DDII as being on your wish list... if this watch is a grail for you then that's what you should go with. Besides, if it breaks the Rolex will be cheaper to get fixed....

True the all gold will certainly be flashier than the Nautilus, especially if you get it on the strap, and the Nautilus should hold it's value better than an all gold Rolex. Check the aftermarket prices on them both for comparison. I do like the Nautilus it's a nice looking watch. Also there is something about wearing a PP. I currently have 3 and when I look at them when I'm wearing one, there is a certain je ne sais quoi to the watch.

I just don't like the Dial/bezel ratio on the Datejust II & Daydate II... The 118238 36mm is much nicer IMO...

Feel free to post a pic or two of yours if you feel comfortable

The bezel on the DDII is sooo flashy I agree the 36mm bezel is more proportional to the dial but I feel the 36mm fits to small on my wrist especially after wearing a Sub-c

DD II YG is too flashy for my tastes. I'd consider the WG version though. Have you checked that out?

I love the Genta designs, so the Nautilus would be my choice.

I'm 21 and would choose the Day-Date over the Nautilus. Perhaps yellow gold looks flashy but it all depends on how you wear it (believe it or not, I've been able to wear gold watches without looking like a rapper even at my age). I do love Patek Philippe and think the Nautilus is beautiful but still gold (especially if both watches are the same price) wins the match in my book.

Now talk to me about a Calatrava or a complicated model and I'll most probably change my mind in a heart beat!

Well this is right in my wheel house, at least as far as the YG DDII goes.

First, let me tell you that the YG DDII is Rolex in it's most perfect form. The President is THE Rolex, and the President as the II in YG is just perfect. It's the watch you first see when Rolex presents itself to you. It is for them, 'The Leader's Watch.' It is the perfect distillation of all that is Rolex.

In Yellow Gold, the DDII is a golden fire torch - it shines like nothing else in the room. It has enough presence to fill an entire room. Everyone you meet will notice the watch on your wrist.

The DDII is the perfect size for you as a younger gentleman (or lady, as is the fashion). It is phenomenally heavy - you will always know you are wearing a solid gold piece of horological excellence on your wrist. While the DD is fine, once you get used to the size of it, the heft of it, and routinely wearing it, you'll consider anything less than the DDII too small. Again, this is very true given your age.

The DDII is phenomenal. Truly THE Rolex. I have worn mine all day every day since I purchased, and will do so for the rest of my life. I love my watch. I cannot recommend it to you strongly enough.

I'd go Nautilus for two reasons. 1) holds value much better and 2) below the radar for most observers but big cred from other WIS. I do believe a WG or Pt DD/DD2 is nice as well but ultimately it wasn't my style.

The 5711 is steel, right? I'd go for a gold DD over a steel Nautilus any day.
