My 1972 Sub is back from it's factory service

The crystal and crown & tube were replaced as requested, but so was the bezel and insert, which I said I didn't want done. I'll call tomorrow to ask about that -- I really don't like the 'new' look it gives it.

The case and bracelet were also polished, so it really does look new. Too new, I'm afraid.

But it has been completely rebuilt and has a two year factory guarantee, so it's not all bad...

Was it the RSC in Canada you had it serviced with? Quite surprised they changed stuff inspite of you telling them not to.

It was (Toronto). They suggested replacing the insert in the quote but I declined that, so I'm surprised it was done -- and even less impressed that the bezel was changed too.

RSC is known for changing out dials, bezels and such without your consent. When it comes to vintage, they do not recognize any Rolex as 'vintage'.

I've seen vintage dials replaced with new style, on Subs and GMTs...heartbreaking.

Hi! It's a shame you're not happy with the result - I was only asking in one of my posts the other day, whether an RSC would swop out inserts etc...now I know.

Any chance of a close up pic?

Looking good, hope you are able to get the original bezel and insert back.

RSC canada

I was told very clearly that if you refuse there service recommendations they will not service the watch. I have just bought a DRSD which came with service papers where they replaced the dial, hands.and bezel insert all the good stuff that you would want to keep untouched.Rolex is only concerned with making the watch meet the factory standards not vintage standards. The other issue if you are not the original owner or have the paper records they will not touch vintage watches.

Here's another shot with a NATO strap to reduce the shine ;-) (again with phone camera so not great -- sorry).
Didn't have time today to call about the bezel & insert, but will do so tomorrow.

I would raise hell about my parts. I know several members have had luck in getting their original parts back.

My understanding is that not all RSC's are the same. Bexley, well what was Bexley (they've just moved nearer Ashford I believe), seem to pay more attention to the customer's wishes with regard to changing out parts.

However, I'll still be sending my '72 1680 and '69 5513 to either William Rice or Steven Hale - you just can't be careful enough with these wonderful old vintage pieces.

Thanks for the heads up on these guys My work is taking me all round the country at the moment - so may have to manage my schedule effectively to incorporate a couple of detours.

BTW Rod - Watch looks great close up.

After seeing your 2nd shot, would not be too disapointed. I understand the frustration, but it does look great right now.

My 16750 just came back from RSC, and I declined many recommendations. They still serviced the watch just as I requested and I am thrilled with the results.

You often here of RSC refusing to complete the job because of work being declinded, but when I hear that, I sometimes wonder if I'm getting the whole story. I'm not saying that is the case here. I have had nothing but good experience from RSC.

Your Sub still looks great, but I'd throw a fit about changes you didn't want. Did you have the original fat-font insert with the tritium pearl? You should obviously try to get that back. They're getting harder and harder to find (and more expensive). Awhile back I had RSC NYC service my 5512 Sub, which I ended up selling, but they did honor my request not to change any visible parts. They just serviced the movement and left everything else. I was nervous about it, and must have told them 100 times not to swap any parts except in the movement. Maybe I just got lucky. Good luck to you!

Swapping things against the customers wishes is what concerns me about sending some of my older watches to RSC. A friend had his matte dial on a 5513 changed to a gloss dial during RSC service and that sorta changes things doesn't it?!

Thanks everyone for your comments and insights. I spoke with the store (Birks) today and they immediately contacted the RSC. They have my insert and will replace
It for me. And yes, it is the fat font style. Somehow, the new just doesn't look right so I'll have it replaced.

Yes, having everything else to as-new specs is really great! It'll be 40 years in August that I bought it and it is good for another 40!

It was 'only' $85 for the new insert -- which will be refunded.
