Hong Kong Bling

Some ugly watches there... so many diamonds you can't tell the time.
Proof that money doesn't buy taste.

Thanks for the link. Very tenuous connection with Rolex for this particular forum.... but I didn't really see any "ugly" watches there, only some watches I personally would not wear.

As for the "money/taste" thing, as I previously said in another thread, if I had to choose between having a lot of money and no taste, and having no money and a lot of taste, I would go with the money, every single time.

Wife's heading over to HK tonight. I'll get her to check them out. Mind you I have asked her to look at a 116234 jubilee bracelet with diamond dial & the new Exp II for me.

Thanks for the link...

Ugly watches ?
The only thing I saw where for me un payable watches ...
We'll I don't like diamonds anyway (for a men).
But that's everybody owns personal choice.

The only watches that I like in this price range are the Richard Mille.
Beautiful, complicated, carbon, new materials . . . . love them

First of all thank you for sharing this clip with us nowzen, second of all allow me to embed the clip for folks to see...

I don't want to stir the pot here as we all know how some folks here believe timepieces with brilliants are tacky, however, I saw pieces of artwork in those clips, the VC Patrimony!!!!! ... There is nothing classless about having a butler serve a potential client $2.5mm worth of timepieces on a platter like they are serving gourmet cornflakes To quote the gent in the clip he says "European customers typically ask how much for that watch, where Chinese customers ask how many do you have!" is a statement onto itself! Great WSJ video! HAGD!

This video shows a pretty Soul-less approach to buying watches. An interesting video, nonetheless. Thanks for sharing.

Ps I would not mind that VC Tourbillion!!!

They're mentality is totally opposite from the ones we have here in this forum. They do use those watches as a show of status and they do not try to hide that.

Thanks for the link. Loved the piece.

Guess I won't be buying any of those watches...I like stainless steel ;-)

BTW, is it just me...or would a minute repeater become very annoying, very quickly? I'm just saying...

Europeans: "How much is that watch?"
Chinese: "How many do you have?"

The amount of wealth in China is staggering. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Thanx...very interesting it's also fun to see the difference in mind set between Asian buyers in Hong Kong and how the Western world buyers look at and perceive luxury items!!!

It's mainly the mainlanders who are conspicuous spenders! HK not so much and are very much like westerners. Money is no problem as long as you have what they want. Westerners can't even compare on the same level. There was a statistic recently, if the mainlanders didn't travel to HK for luxury items, about 700k jobs would be lost. Can't wait to go on my trip to HK next month...back home!!

At the 45 second mark, there is a 2 tone Datejust with diamond Jubilee dial, and it seems to be running backwards. Can someone explain this?

It might just be you Bill... To handle a minute repeater timepiece is to understand fine horological art!

I love to count the total Rolex displays in HKG. They are just everywhere, and being a chinese born in HKG, my parents always said you need to own a Rolex watch regardless how rich/poor you are living in a mansion or public housing. It has resale value!

Agree with that, HKG people do like to buy Rolex with manner, and know what they want, so try the watch and buy it or negotiate any deals. On the other hand, look at all the people queuing up outside all the luxury stores in HKG, they are mainly from Mainland China (simply to avoid the luxury tax). You can't walk in to any stores in HKG as a HKG Chinese or enjoy the shopping experience in luxury stores anymore.

The mainland tourists do buy in bulk with cash.

Wouldn't say those were ugly. Not my taste either. But IMO just because it's not to my liking doesn't mean the people that do have bad taste. If everyone wanted the same thing Rolex could get by on 1 model. Vanilla gets old after a while.

Wow. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!!

I worked in Hong Kong for a year. I'd heard of the status/materialism thing before I got there, but it was beyond the scope of my imagination. The extent to which they'd get dressed up at the night clubs, I thought I was standing in the middle of a fashion show.

Right...Perhaps I can get one and let it "ding, ding, ding" all day long after I "make it" and don't give a poop what anyone else thinks.

Thanks Sam. Had a nice day. Good conversation over a pint with some TRFers at a little GTG today. Dr. Robert may be posting a pic soon.

Same to you
