Silver date wheels....
What is the history/time frame for use of the silver date wheel versus the later white ones in GMT Master's, Subs and datejusts?
I am a bit confused as to when one should or should not expect to find them in a watch. Thanks

My '81 16660 Sea Dweller has the silver/ light gray date wheel. I'm not sure on the models or years these were used.

My 1969 Submariner 1680 has one. I've heard even the very first Rolex 16750s had them, mine is from 1981-ish and has white (could have been replaced)

I believe Silver date wheels were fased out in the very early 80s. Any Sub, GMT and Exp before that time, should have a silver date wheel with flat top threes. Some silver date wheels were replaced to white ones during service visits to Rolex SCs so finding a true vintage collector's piece means finding a watch from that time where the date wheel is still silver.
