Hey all, I am fairly new to this forum but have been plotting my first Rolex for months now. I am trying to decide between two GMT's...

-One is a 7 mil series vintage Pepsi with a nice faded bezel and creamy lume on a leather strap (no bracelet, papers, box).

-For about $600 more I am looking at a much newer Coke GMT (1990's) that comes with an oyster bracelet and all of the paperwork and box (full set).

I really like the look of the vintage one over the newer one but as my first Rolex should I be looking for a complete set? I realize this is the vintage forum so opinions might be skewed but I have read many threads talking about the importance of a full set and the downsides of having the head only. Just wanted the perspective of some vintage enthusiasts.

My personal opinion is to go with the watch that appeals to you personally.

When buying a vintage watch or a merely a pre-owned watch, you are really buying the seller. Buy from someone on the forum with a good reputation.
Boxes and hangtags are a plus, but go with the one you like- and if you buy
from a trusted seller on this site, you will be getting what you pay for.

Having said this, I would buy the newer watch, wear the heck out of it, and
before you know it, it will be a vintage watch with your own history attached to it

You'll never regret buying the one that appeals to you more! Personally, I don't care about boxes or papers in the slightest; don't worry about them unless they give you more personal satisfaction.

Doing a similar thing to you. As I plan on not selling, for me papers and box not really an issue.

Though a strap would be useful!

Box and papers can be a great addition, but they're not the end all be all in regards to which one you should be getting. Look for the one in the best condiotion possible. Also you should be aware of the subtle differences between the versions you will be looking at. This is a good place to refer to:

If you trust the seller, buy the one you like. Complete sets are nice and assist somewhat in resale. The newer GMTs are just not that special to me.

I like the older / vintage watches but buy what suites you best.
If you prefer the newer model go for it.
You have to wear it finally and when it's not 100 % what you like you won't wear it with pleasure.

I'm a fan of vintage Rolex, but $600 extra to get a newer version with bracelet sounds too good to pass up. If you buy the older model and add a bracelet ($500-$1,000, used), it seems to me that you're money behind.
