16710 GMT-II = Entry Level Rolex?

So recently I just bought a 16710 GMT-II. All my co-workers are telling me I am an idiot for paying $4,000 for a watch buying a Rolex. Of course I'm sure a lot of people can relate to this how they tell me "it's just a watch, to tell time. There's no point in buying a $4,000 watch." I told them if I re-sell it, I could make some of my money back and they say that if I re-sell it, I would only get like $1,000 back because it would be USED and no one would want to pay thousands of dollars for it being used and worn and it just depreciates just like cars. Then he proceeds to say "If I wanted to buy a Rolex I can, but why would anybody spend that much on a watch? I rather look at my bank account and see $10,000 in it rather than seeing only $5,000.. What purpose do you do with that watch? Just flash it around! Yeah! Rolex! But look at your bank account you got $5,000 instead of 10 grand"

Then they go on saying I should've bought a Tag Heuer and says Link series or Monaco look way better than the GMT-II. They tell me the GMT-II is an "entry level Rolex" and it's a 5 year old Watch, If I were to buy a Submariner then at least that would've been a 'higher model.' Then they compare it to saying "It's like buying an entry level old BMW 3 series... It's for people who wish they could buy a real BMW but can't afford it so they get the crappiest one available just to say they drive a BMW"

I'm gonna need a little bit of help here guys, I am just not sure on how to stick it to them and I really want to defend Rolex. Maybe I just bought the wrong watch and I should've bought the Sub instead

I would say rolex will retain there value if you keep long enough say 15 to 20 years. You maybe able to make a little profit.

If wait for 30 to 40 yrs time you maybe able to make good profit especially the sport models. GMT2 is not a level entry watch as it has date function. The level entry are explorer1 and ND submariner.

Welcome Chris & congratulations on a great choice of watch,

As for the the 16710 being an entry level Rolex, I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life!!!! Its a magnificent timepiece, some would say (me included) that its the Sub & then some.

The trouble with these bar-room experts they have plenty of opinions but sadly none are their own, they only serve to pass around worthless comments & catch-phrases to try & make themselves feel suprior about the 007 fake Omega on their wrist.

Enjoy your beautiful watch & wear it in good health, its how you feel about it that counts, look forward to seening some pics.

PS Here's my own "entry level" Rolex

No entry level

Good luck with your watch. It sounds like these people are actually envious of your purchase.

Agreed, jealousy tends to bring out the worst in people.

I would politely tell those know-it-alls to go $hi+ in their hat. The GMT is considered one of the most historically significant models Rolex has ever produced. A Tag Link? Are they serious? Don't get me wrong, I own a Tag Monaco and love it. But nothing holds it's value like a Rolex.

There is no such thing as an Entry level Rolex. All Rolex watches are Rolex watches, just different model. Your co-worker is probably just jealous and unedicated on watches.

Does your co-worker smoke? If so bring that to his attention of all the thousands of dollars he has wasted with nothing to show except bad lungs. What about gameling or poor relationships or cars?

You have a fine watch. IF you were to resell, even after a year of hard use, you could sell for probably a $1000 less than you bought and would be easy to re-sell.

You have a nice watch, wear it with pride and enjoy!!!

First, don't buy a watch to make money. It will barely keeps its value.

Second, instead of changing your watch, change your friends.

Your co-workers sound like d!cks. Tell him you're not worried about what's in your account because there's more coming. How many of those knuckleheads have $5000 televisions that will only last 6 years? I'm sure a few have wasted $5k on lap dances or online poker.

Come work in my office. My boss has an Explorer II, CEO has an EXP II, guy in the next office has a Sub, CMO has a Breitling. You'll see a Lady Datejust or two in finance, and plenty of other nice watches in sales. We are a successful organization, and it shows.

You really can't convince them what they have already made their mind up about. Their trying to bait you into rationalizing the watch, for which you should not do. Don't buy into their game. I'll bet that secretly they are staring at it when they can steal a glance wishing they could own such a piece of craftsmanship and timeless style.

As far as the guy who said about the bank account and the $5K, I would just say that you did not spend his money and you would not ask him to rationalize anything he did with HIS money.

The GMT is an awesome, classic watch.

I recently bought a new GMT and have been contemplating my response to such comments when they invariably get thrown at me.

In the end, I plan on just smiling. They'll get it.

Enjoy it and wear it with pride.

You'll get many many more smiles each and every time you look at your Rolex than when you look at those so called friends faces!

Enjoy your beautiful Rolex!

As others have said, no need to pay attention to that nonsense!

I've never gotten flack for my watches, but I have found that, for those willing to listen or that have the slightest interest, a small history lesson on the significance of a certain model has usually made them a little more appreciative -- the advent of international flight and jet-lag that sparked the desire for a GMT function makes me appreciate that model for more than just its looks, similarly, the sub has its long history as well as a history of being issued to the military, etc. It's really the stories about the development of the watch that make me enjoy Rolex's (as well as other innovative brands) beyond their (obvious to me) aesthetic value. A watch created to serve a useful function is not likely "entry level"! Even if no one else wants to hear the history, read about it for yourself to add to the enjoyment of your watch.

As long as you enjoy it, who cares!

Best,
Rich

Chris, Don't worry about what these guys think. When I graduated HS, I bought a GMT and had no money left over. It cost me $700 new and I have worn it for 25 years. That comes out to $28 /year. Ok, I have not included the factory service costs which now run 1/2 of what I paid for the watch but it is still cheap when I look at how much enjoyment I have gotten from it. It does not depreciate like a car. I don't have anything that has lasted this long, still looks new, and works as well as the day I bought it. Other Rollies have come and gone but my "daily driver" is still the GMT. I can now afford to wear something a lot more expensive but I like the GMT. I actually have a new stainless GMT ceramic on order so it looks as if I will be passing the old one on to my son after 25 years of faithful service. I have found my friends who by Tag's, Swiss Army, Breitling etc change their watches every 5 years or less. I rarely see somone wearing the same watch for as long as I've worn mine. So, in the end, they spend many times what they would have spent on a Rolex and have only drawer full of cheap metal to show for it. Best of luck.

Entry level? Only in the sense that you've now "entered" the world of Rolex.

You have a fantastic watch with a storied tradition. It will last you a lifetime.

Ignore the naysayers. They either get it or they don't--and clearly they don't.

Wear it in good health and welcome to TRF!

Chris, sorry to hear that! But GMT Master II as the entry level Rolex?

Pls ask your friend which one would be the high end Rolex then? Leopard Daytona?
