Creation of a WIS!
So how does one become a WIS? Do you think WIS's are born or are all created by their enviroment?
In my case, there wasn't one influence but I remember when my grandfather gave me my first watch when I was 13, it peaked my interest in them which laid pretty dormant until I got into college. Even then, I purchased my first Rolex but didn't start really getting into horology until almost 20 years later when I rediscovered the brand Doxa which I read about from a Clive Cussel book in my youth. From then on its been a pretty steep (and expensive) down hill slide! A few yeas ago, one of my closest friends who is a successful businessman wore this awful cheap watch. One of my first watch purchases when I dipped my toe in was a Hamilton Action Chrono. He saw it and really liked it but couldnt believe I spent $400 on a watch when I already had a nice watch. "What do you need two watches for he asked?" After explaining about the history of Hamilton, blah, blah he decides to get one as well. Now I got him! A year later after he gets the Hamilton, he confides in me that he has always loved look of the Rolex Eplorer II but his wife would never understand anyone purchasing a $5000 watch. I tell him you only live once and BANG...he pulls the trigger much to my suprise and gets a black dialed one! Sooo, now that I have him on the path, while not a true WIS he does appreciate nice watches and often will comment when we are out if he spots something nice. I saw him a couple of days after I purchased my AP and without saying a word, I catch him looking at my watch during dinner. He says, " That must be new and I love the leather strap(hornback)! See, I now have created a WIS in the making! Hah.. So, how many of you have created a WIS or what/who created you? P.s. My friend recently asked me to find him his "grail"... a SS Daytona. Look how my lil boy has grown! I'm so faklemped!!!

Well done David!
My brother in law is a bit like that. He used to wear a cartier and when he got married my sister wanted to get him another nice watch fro teh marriage. So a shopping my sister and i went. We also got him a black EXP II. Since then he has bought a couple of IWC and is going to get a milgauss GV . we speak regularly about watches and rolex especially; if he sees something he just calls or emails ( he is in UK) to see if its real, condition, age, is it worth etc as he knows i can tell him most things in 5 minutes. To wis convertors

You're probably born with an affinity for watches and then a site like this just propels you to becoming a WIS.

My father was a watchmaker and I was wearing my first watch at the age of six so I guess it was a matter of indoctrination rather than personal preference. Now it`s a matter of choice because I have the means to aquire the kind of watch that I want.

It's not a choice. I always knew I was a WIS trapped inside a man's body. I try to lead a normal, fulfilling life, though I admit often I'm promiscuous in my watch buying.
My wife and I do have a strict don't ask, don't tell policy. |
