Am I missing something?

First let me say that I wish all sellers get as much as they can for their watches. That is the goal of anyone selling something. Having said that I notice at any given time there are 1300+ Daytona's on Ebay. They run the gamut from vintage of which I am not referring ie: Paul Newman. I am referring to modern watches that are used or claimed to be new. Many without all the original items. Many are asking retail and more for used watches. I own other items of collectible value and most are down 30% as far as value for selling purposes. In this economy it is not a great time to sell anything. If you truly want to sell something, accept the current market, price accordingly, and move on, otherwise IMO the watch won't sell regardless how many times it is advertised. I know that I would like to buy a relatively new Daytona with all boxes, paper, and tags. Not for a lowball price, just a reasonable one.

Isn't "reasonable" whatever the market will bear?

If they're all selling at about the same price, I guess there must be buyers who agree they're worth that price.

Or all those sellers are stubborn and are not really ready to sell any of those watches.

That is my point. I see the same watches over and over. They are not selling most of them. I don't have cheap mans disease, I just don't want to be taken for a buzz cut. I can buy a new one. I guess my point is these folks really don't want to sell. An example I saw was a 1990's watch with the Zenith movement. No box, paper or tags. Shows signs of wear. Buy it now for only $11,250.

Dude...

Ebay is littered with online sellers that have 20% of what they list on there . Think of some of the watches listed for crzy prices as a means to establish credibility and to look grander than they are. The sad reality is, if there were no buyers for these over-priced watches, these sellers would vanish overnight. In short, these sellers do sell watches probably just lower end.

Interesting. I have owned a business that has sold on Ebay for 10+ years. I have never had the inclination that any of my competitors were listing items that they did not actually have.

It comes down to supply and demand sometimes. The other times is what you pointed out on what the market is commanding.

I've heard of quite a few instances where a buyer is contacted with the 'ole "We're currently out of stock of that item, would you care for..." Also, there are some sellers who have multiple listings of the same, let's just say "TT lady Datejust " One has diamond dial and bezel, one has just diamond dial and the other just standard dial (same watch, different accessory "options"... There are quite a few Rolex chop shops on ebay.

I'm not naming any names as I have nothing to gain by pointing the finger. I think it is important for buyer's to know that this sort of nonsense is going on.

P.S I also sell on ebay. I would like to clarify, there are some legitimate and honest sellers on ebay.

Ebay is also an inexpensive way of advertising what you have for sale. You can contact the seller with an offer and buy it through Ebay, no harm done. There are a lot of inexperienced Ebayers and inexperienced watch shoppers and these dealers allow for that. JMHO

I think if anyone believes that these Daytona's sell for these crazy prices they are sadly mistaken.

In my opinion, the seller either hopes to find a wealthy foriegn buyer, start negotiating at their price and meet in the middle or hope to find a careless buyer....

The only way to determin "fair value" is to look at actaully selling prices, but I have not seen too many Daytona's put up with no reserve.....

This is a side note, but Zenith Daytona pricing can't be compared to the current Daytona pricing, because they're two different generations, with different levels of availability, different features (dials, case finish), etc. (Not sure if that's what your doing, I'm assuming it is based on your original post and the quoted text). I personally don't think modern watch pricing can be compared across generations except as an academic exercise. Different products.

As it was said, reasonable is what the market will bear. If these prices are actually too high for buyers "in this economy," the sellers will be forced to eventually come down. Obviously, the used watch market (on eBay, TRF sales) does not reflect buyer sentiment in real time - there's a bit of a lag, and sometimes it's longer for certain items. So if you're right it's only a matter of time before you get the price more reasonable to you.

In any case, good luck in your Daytona search.

What you appear to be missing Rob is the fact that most high priced luxury goods advertised on eBay never sell at the asking price but for a much lower and "reasonable" amount, what you should be looking at is the selling price not the asking price. If you don`t already realize the reality of how the game is played on eBay and everywhere else, for that matter, then your question sounds truly naive. You seem to be well aware of the value of certain goods so your question really makes no sense. If you want to know what motivates seller behaviour then you need to study psychology.

I learned something today...not suffering from "cheap mans disease"..?.

Anyway I agree with you that the 16520 Steel "Zenith' Daytona is high at $11,250
I will be selling (soon) my W serial in mint condition for a lot less.
