Most definitely a legend. Before I opened the thread I had a feeling it might be him.

Mr. Shelby was a legend in the auto industry - a true visionary. I met and talked with him a couple of different times when he would attend the local Shelby conventions here in Dallas. He always had a presence about him and made you feel comfortable taking with him. R.I.P Mr. Shelby.

Truly a man who set his own goals and limits, never took no for an answer and had the quintessential American spirit. His passing is up there with Enzo Ferrari, Ferdinand Porsche and any pioneering maverick that wouldn't take the status quo as an answer to his dreams. You have my respect and admiration Carroll Shelby, we are all the better for having lived in your time. I am truly moved and literally teary-eyed at this news. It really is the end of an era.
R.I.P. You certainly have earned it!!!!

What an incredible man.
One word to describe him: TENACIOUS. One word to remember him: LEGEND He exemplified the way I one day I wish to achieve. He had passion and strength. You will be missed. Now that you are in heaven go after Enzo and Ferry and race from cloud to cloud!

I was fortunate enough to meet the man years ago at a press event at Ontario Motor Speedway. Ford was introducing the Mustang II Cobra and Carroll was there to promote them. They had a course of orange cones set up for the journalists to see how fast they could run the course. Mr Shelby was standing there watching and looking throughly bored. Then my turn came to drive the course. Keep in mind, I was 20 at the time and I figured if Ford was setting up a test course and they had Mr Shelby there, and they had their new Cobra II's there then they expected me to drive the car hard and I did. I started by revving the engine up all the way in neutral (it had an automatic) then I dropped it into gear. I went screaming off down the course, when I go to the end I stomped on the throttle, grabbed the emergency brake and threw the back end through the corner and proceeded to come screamiong back through the cones. When I got the to the end, with the fastest time of the day, the Ford rep told me I couldn't drive anymore of their cars that day, but Mr. Shelby came over and with a big grin on his face told me that's how he intended his cars to be driven. He then got into the Cobra and he was sooo smooth through the course, breaking my time by bunches and putting a smile on my face. May he R.I.P.

He is (was, RIP) a member at the country club my family belonged to in MI. Very nice gentleman. Living in NYC, I don't make it back there often anymore so I hadn't seen him in years.
