Was music better "before" file sharing?
Hi!
Is file sharing to blame for less good music beeing made? Because of poorer musicians with less time in the studios? Or is it I that have grown old and can't appreciate the music being made today? |

No idea.
I still listen to the music I like. Like many I would think, it's the music I grew up listening too.

Can't remember the last time I bought a CD, and there's not much on my Ipod post 90's. To put it politely the "music" on offer these days is not worth two knobs of billy goat sh*t. Just my opinion, but turning 50 isn't far off. Some people might like the lyrics and beat of today, I'd rather be tied to a cactus and pelted with pebbles than listen to it...

It's all for the better. When I was young you listened to one radio station playing one style of music. Today the young have very open ears, enjoying everything from Sinatra to, well, whatever the hell it is they listen to now and everything in between.

Remember that we've still got all the old music as well as all the new stuff.
Oh, and the option to play any or all of it anywhere and at anytime. Better, much much better. |

Filesharing has no influence in the type of music being made. Filesharing does however make it easier, in theory, to reach out with music. Anybody can create and put up whatever on youtube. The major companies will produce and market whatever will sell. Remember the boy band wave of the 90's? That was before filesharing, and it still sounded like s***.

filing sharing was a good time for music. in some areas of the industry as a whole it went up in sales. the economy came and went but it was not due to filing sharing.
as for music, i think the height of hip hop was 1994-1999. as hip hop declined music as a whole went down. as for music as a whole the golden era were in the 60s. I had my first ipod in 2002, if i bought the stock instead of the ipod and computer i'd be very very rich. well not very very rich but rich enough to buy 30 iphones and 50 computers or so. u used to be able to carry files on the HD of the ipod and use it as a portable HD, not the case anymore unless u got some crazy software. very easy to exchange a thousand mp3 from person to person. kids these days pick up guitar hero and not a real guitar. |

all true, but a trip to the store to pick up and album, 8 track or cassette was always a day to remember . That thrill is lost forever

I understand the question. But let me deviate: YES, before file sharing music sounded better. No compressed digital files, true instruments nd warm sounds. Artists had to record over and over on tape from "real" instruments (not from Garage band). Records! Remember those? Had a warm, full sound. And so on.
With regards to your actual question, I believe that bc of the cost involved in releasing a new "tune" quality has diminished. Not to pick on Justin Bieber but I sincerely doubt any of his songs will become Classics the way Shine on your crazy diamond IS.

I think it made it better because it allows us to share different musical styles around the world. Now if you guys think that music isn't good anymore it's up to you but I think it's more of an opinion (and this comes from a 21 years old man who listens to blues and old rock).

It's better for us cause everything is at our finger tips, but it doesn't seem like music is really important to kids anymore? I guess I'm turning into my grandparents cause it just seems like there is a dearth of anything new to listen to which is what they said to me in the 70's. So on second thought, never mind, what do I know...

Most of my music is over 20 years old.
99% of todays music is no good.... I don't think file sharing is the menace, perhaps the faster pace of life? A TV is old after 6 months... Huh? No 3D?

When I was a kid everything that played on the radio was created by musicians - not 'artists'.

I agree with you, that might be part of what is bothering me too, but based on my age I'm immediately disqualified from commenting further because all old farts like me are discredited just based being a lame grandpa!

There is very little music made I the last 10 years or so that really speaks to me. Like most, I find myself listening to the music I grew up with. I would almost rather listen to the music my parents listened to, than some of the so called "music" being made today.
I think the iTunes model and the ability of anyone to make a record has had a bigger impact than file sharing. People can buy the 1 or 2 songs they like off an album for $2.50 as opposed to an entire album for $13. Songs don't get the exposure they used to. Plus, there is just a lot of crap music being made.

Think watches cars and music all reached their zenith in the 60s and we've been struggling to replicate it ever since. Give me a Lotus Elan, a cal 321 speedmaster and Hendrix playing all along the watchtower any day... And I'm 24
As for file sharing, the two are not related
