**** G O L D ***** Titbit *******

Gold titbit.

If all the gold ever mined was forged into a cube it would only measure 19 metres square. It would fit onto my small front lawn.

Approx 166,000 tonnes to 2007, 66% of which mined since 1950.

You can put that on my lawn any day :)

Seems strange though, Fort Knox seems a lil' too big for such a small %

That's interesting, Paul....but where did you get that info?

The last time I read something like that, it was a cube the size of the base of the Eifel tower.

Are you nuts? That damn base would be at least 50 m x 50 m = 2500 sq.m!!

I first saw it on the BBC program "QI". Stephen Fry doesn't feed you any "bull$hit", just weird facts.

I did a rough and ready double check by checking the mass of a kg of gold and then multiplying it up.

Seemed to be correct.

Well, if its in a cube, then it would be 19 cubic meters.

That would be a pile (~60 feet) 19 meters long by 19 meters wide, by 6 stories tall..

You're right. The picture I had seen was that of huge gold CUBE covering the entire base of the Eifel Tower and just about reaching up to the first horizontal level of the tower.

Hey you two guys.

Get in the back of my car and I will drive you both back to my front lawn, where the gold is.

Forgot to mention that the statement is WRONG.

I actually did the real math and the size would be 21.29 metres cubed.

A gold kilobar (100g) is 114x51x10mm - 58140mm cubed or 5.184 X10 power of -5 metre cubed

That would mean 1 cubic metres = 17,200 kgs

21.29 cubed X 17,200 = 166,000,000 kgs or 166,000 metric tonnes

21.29 metres cube.

What a nice feature for the garden.

If ye call that a "feature", what would your garden be made of?
Diamonds?
By the way, again Bull has got his hands in that too I suppose.

Nope, diamonds was my mother's forte.Ironically, the jeweller where she bought most of her jewellry from, mostly in the 1980's,is the same jeweller/AD that I bought my GMT/Blue TT Sub/one white Daytona from .....

In the papers here ,a nice story about a greenish diamond found in the Northwest province. It is 7000 CARATS !!!!!!! The Cullinan was "only" 3000.The green one can be real or a hoax.It is yet to be confirmed. If its real, its unlikely to originate from SA and is then most likely,to come from higher up in Africa.Thats with all its implications ........ Personally,I think its a BS story. The Brit who "takes care of it ' seems a bit of a scammer. Time will tell.

Metres cubed is different than square metres.
So the 19m cubed sounds about right from what I recall.
