"Big Green Egg" BBQ Grill
Thinking about one of these for the Summer grilling months (and year round).
They are about $800'ish, but wanted to see if there are any owners here and your impressions. Everything that I have read says they are amazing grills/smokers. Any owners or friends of owners |

Never used one, but I've only heard good things about them from friends/Acquaintances. I checked them out when I bought my large Green Mountain grill and the owner of the grill store said they are very popular.

Yes I do, its great. I chose it over some of the other brands because you can adjust the heat in 5 degree incriments.

We have had a Green Egg for two years. Works great.
Two concerns to keep in mind. If you get them too hot the gaskets will leak afterwards. This is not a problem for bbq, but is an issue if smoking items. Simple to replace the gaskets. Second thing is to be sure to keep your charcoal in dry storage as slightly damp will not burn correctly. Overall..vey happy. |

I purchased a grill dome about 2 months ago. Same design only IMO a much better use of materials. Ok, so now the nitty gritty, I planned on using mine about once a week. I use it about 4-5 times per week. My wife calls it the outdoor oven. The food comes out moist and delicious every time. I have made everything from hamburgers to a 15 hour smoked pork butt. All were fantastic. I live in Florida and was sick of having to buy a new grill every 2 or so years. This thing is well worth it's weight in gold. I don't know why I didn't buy one sooner. Make sure you check out the grilldome. I think you get a better product for the money.

Had mine over 2 years. It is really around $1100 after you get everything you need.
Use it 2-3 times a week. Well worth the investment. |

I have the big Weber charcoal, the Vermont Castings gas, and now the Louisiana Smoker. I use the Weber and the Louisiana more than anything else. Might sell the gas grill and put it toward this Green egg. Don't know much about them, but those who have them love them. As stated before, the key is proper maintanence.

I just need a medium, but yes there are a lot of 'toys' to add to it. Headed to local dealer tomorrow to buy it--can't wait. |

I only use the gas grill in emergencies now as the food is vastly superior on the egg. Look for a Big Green Egg cookout in your area. The shop that sponsors them will sell the demo units after the event. I saved about 30% that way. BTW- I saw a knockoff at Costco last month that looked pretty well made. It was still about $800, though.

I have one I purchased in college. It's great. I use it when we do larger cookouts. When it's just my fiancé and I just cook a quicker meal we use our gas grill. I love that you can smoke on it all day or get it close to 1k degrees to really cook a steak. I like charcoal grills but for me I need a gas grill and a charcoal grill. Both have good and bad. I love cooking BBQ for 10-15 hours and I've used the egg a few times for that but I prefer my smoker for that vs the egg.

The only thing with the large is that I find myself normally cooking for 1 or 2, so large may be overkill. I smoke out about 3 times a week, so want to be able to have one that is manageable, that is why I was thinking medium. Headed to dealer today. I will look into the Egg Cookout as well. |

The one problem I've heard from owners in muggy climes is mold growing on the interior. Not hard to fix but makes visitors queasy if you have it there and cooking them a meal. BTW, my Weber smoker will do same thing if closed up for long periods.
The easy fix is getting a hot fire going and burn it off - but that maintenance is seldom done by folks.

Well you were right, bought the large, and yes you cannot get out for less than $1100 after some accessories.
Will post some pics soon...can't wait to get it fired up! |

If you get one have a gas grill also for quick meals. They take time to get going that you don't always want to mess with for a quick burger during the week. Otherwise great.

Bge
I have had mine for 4 years. Large is just right for up to 6 people. Mostly just my wife and I. Be sure to get the fan it is great. I used a hair dryer for a couple of years to blow air into the bottom like a forge. Truly sears a steak. get the cook book and follow some of the tips. I did not think that a grill could make a difference but it is unbelievable. Beer But Chicken is wonderful.
Take care Steve |

Now try some baby back ribs this weekend. That's what I will be doing in your honor as a new Egghead. This thing makes the best smoked turkey I have ever had. I used a little apple chips and slow smoked over a pan of apple cider and now I am the designated turkey chef for friends and family at Thanksgiving. Look at the big green egg forum for some great tips. I had a little problem controlling the fire at first. Never let it get too much hotter than what you want it to be at for slow cooking and you will be fine.

I'm too impatient for one, but two of my good friends have them and they are awesome. Some of the best meals I've had were cooked on them.
