Greetings....

...From Shanghai.
First post here from the land of plenty (as long as you have a little money). Moved to Shanghai from New Orleans about 6 months ago. Just purchased a new Plat YM in Hong Kong. It's a tad heavier than my Timex Ironman, but I'll get use to it.

Enjoying the site and all the relevant information. A couple of questions:
- When not wearing my Rolex it was reccomended to lay it 'face down' (on a protected surface)? If true, what is the benefit?
- What is the concensus on insuring the Rolex? Need a seperate in-land marine policy?
- Is 5 years the average time before service / cleaning is reccomended?
- If purchased with AMEX card, does the warranty double and is damage, loss, theft protection cover the Rolex?

Many thanks in advance.

Welcome Scojay
You can lay your watch face down, but that is not necessary. You may find laying it down in different positions will make it gain or lose a second or two overnight, which can be useful if your watch is losing or gaining a second while you are wearing it during the day (i.e. it provides regulation of your watch to +/- zero seconds per day.
Cheers

This info card from Rolex can help with regulating your watch:

Welcome to TRF!

Have a look at the FAQ's section in the "General Rolex Forum" where you find a table over "Positional Correction" (just under the "Winding setting your watch" description):

Rolex FAQ's. CLICK!

However, this "Positional Correction" table does more apply to the OLD Rolex movements than to the NEW mvts., but the "Crown Down" still seems to affect my SD (making it lose a second over night which is then gained again during the day, making it SPOT ON!).

Also, it is a piece of good advice in general to lay your watch on the crown since then only the crown gets scratched (if you put it on some hard surface) and not the case side at nine o' clock.

Edit: The chart I am talking about is the one Al just posted

Welcome Peter! As far as the separate insurance, I have mine listed on my homeowners policy, but separately using an appraisal since your basic coverage isn't enough to handle much. Some on here use another company that is for jewelery only. I have it more for the "stupidity factor" as I'm liable to drop, bang or otherwise damage the watch. The 5 year cleaning is IMO an arbitrary number like changing your oil every three thousand miles. Different auto companies change that every year. My AD recommended around 8 years. IMO between 5 and 10 would be OK. I wouldn't let mine go past 10. JMO.

Welcome Peter to TRF and congrats on your new purchase. It's a great looking watch however, I would appreciate it more when you send photos....haha. As far as insuring, I have 4 watches that I've never insured. I think it's a personal preference though. Some do, some don't. If you live in an area where crime is high, then maybe you would want to consider it for piece of mind.

As for the purchase with the Am-Ex card, call them and ask. Rolex probably won't extend the warranty and all claims after the Rolex warranty expires, will have to be claimed through Am-Ex.

Hope this helps. Wear that great watch with pride.

That's great information/advice Bo. My LV gains around 2.5/day crown up. I will have to try crown down to see if this improves.

I have a policy with Jewelers Mutual. I insure 2 Rolex's and 2 Diamond rings. Good stuff.
