Sub for my daily? Need some advice on Rolex and Daily&Dive use!
Hi Everyone,
I think this is where this topic goes - tried posting already... but it disappeared :S Readers digest version: New to the forums (Great to be here, Hi everyone! seems like a great group!) Previous Watches (Philip Stein and assorted beaters) New Watch (Planning on a Sub - but this is where the post comes in...) Planning on a Sub for my daily + diving. I don't like leaving a nice watch in shady vaults when I dive... and of course diving is new... my PS is spending a lot of time in vaults, and me worrying it's been stolen. Rubber strap for comfort , spend a lot of time on computers - Dive down to 130ft.. working on Tec Diving down to 255. I'm VERY new to the whole luxury watch thing. hit a big birthday the other day. Wanted a new watch I could use for diving as well... and have finally started to do well in my career. Wanted a DeepSea.. (and then the GF/soon to be wife started playing me too...and ya.. now two preowned Subs lol) but the Gent I work with now has me terrified. How tough are these things? he knows quite a bit more about watches than I do... and says that I need a beater, i shouldn't be wearing it at things like the gym, Diving i should still take a beater instead at that depth. I asked about the Tag 500m Aquarracer (it LOOKS tougher...) and he said no. He doesn't care if it's a TaWTac diver... no matter how tough an automatic watch looks, it's simply not meant for that kind of beating. Is this true? is my dreams of a Sub being my daily, all use watch nothing more then a far fetched dream? Should i look (sadly) at a different watch and wait to get a Rolex until it's purely for business? Hope you guys can give me some advice! Thanks |

Nothing wrong with wearing a Sub every day.. It's no more fragile than any other heavy duty, high quality, rugged watch..
Rolex didn't get a reputation as one of the best Dive Watches in the world (in it's heyday) by being left at home..

Sounds like all i have to do now is win one of those pesky Ebay bids before it exceeds my budget... (if i lose in the last 10 minutes of a 8 day auction again i'm going to be livid)

Can't go wrong with a Sub & using it for what it is meant for, however be careful on ebay. Good luck!

I'd buy from one of the resellers in the classifieds here. Whatever savings you may enjoy can be quickly offset by unscrupulous sellers on eBay. Recently purchased my sub from George Ab and have been very pleased.

I would also suggest looking at a reputable reseller on this forum as well over ebay.

difference is usually 1k though - is Ebay that bad? - i mean most of these sellers have 100% feedback with 1000's of sales...
I'll defer to you guys - can't post in there for another 14 days. Damn impatience ;) Appreciate the tips |

Looking into the Watch Out section really scares me from attempting to buy on eBay - just watch that section for few days. It has not been one week w/o guys pointing out shady eBay deal with many of them from sellers with impecable eBay rating. Scary stuff. Good luck with your acquisition. |

it's been a week of owning my sub, and I've been running, swimming, crossfit, and wearing it to work. It hasn't fallen apart. Still keeping accurate time. And I love it more because it's been with me 24/7.

Go the SubC.
It's built for diving, built for sport is tough as nails, and can take anything that life may throw at it. I wear mine to the gym. It's so tough it can bench press more than I can :P It also happens to be one of the very few watches that is great for EVERY occasion - from sporty and casual, to dressy with a suit in the boardroom and formal wear at a dinner function. This thing oozes style and taste, and will never EVER go out of fashion. Double thumbs up; get a Sub. Regardless of whether it's the SubC or not. |

Beating and diving with my sub for 15 years. The only time I take it off is at night or if I'm painting something. Runs great. Never serviced but will schedule soon.

The sub can definitely take what you're planning.
Of course, there are cheaper options, but they won't satisfy your desire to have a submariner. |

Yes it can be that bad. Keep an eye on the for sale section here and wait for the right one to come along. Keep saving while you wait. Be patient at this stage in the process of finding your watch and ultimately you'll be very happy you were.

I think the reason why automatic timepieces are made at the first place is so thay can be worn daily without worrying about batteries. Every rolex has the quality and durability to be a beater, only some looks too good to be one. But sub, is perfect for daily.

There are several members here doing advanced amateur diving, and a couple of professional (current and retired) divers, out of which some have written about serious deep sea diving. As far as I remember all of them wear Rolexes. If you can afford to have your watch insured - or if you can afford to think of the cost as a sunk cost (although it is not) - then you should use it as intended. In my mind there is no better diving watch than a Rolex Submariner (possibly Seiko and Sinn have a couple that are very attractive too...). My preference is the 14060, since it is a very uncomplicated watch made for its purpose. I am not a diver, although I have done a few dives, and I have always used my Rolexes (and Tudors) as intended. I have them insured, and I only spend money that I can afford to be without (but so far I have not lost money on the occasional flipping that I have done). Good luck! Best, A |

god, i haven't been this excited about something probably since the first time a girl reached for my zipper ;) (Sad, they're probably equal.... or the Rolex wins.. girl i only had to wait a couple years, Rolex i've had to wait over two decades...) Thanks again everyone! |

As previously stated stay away from EBay, unless you know what you are doing, and use one of the many trusted TRF sellers. Read the "Who's Who" section and you will know who the trusted sellers are.
I suggest a previously owned 16610, but I'm biased. If Tec diving have it pressure tested every year. Good luck on your hunt - it's half the fun.

Yes.
Ebay is almost always (IMO) a risky proposition. Too many variables. Here you have a well-known and small group of "trusted" sellers who have a reputation to keep and can be counted on - serious credibility and track record that is much more verifiable than anyone you are likely to run into on the 'Bay.

A Rolex can handle anything you can, for the most part. If you dive often you should get it pressure test once or twice a year.
Congrats in advance and happy birthday

I've taken my DSSD on several deployments and have worn it on parachute jumps and all kinds of hard duty. No worries. I have scratches on it to prove it.

It's a tough watch and can take lots of beatings.

With that out of the way, I'd recommend getting the Submariner. Plus you can claim proudly to be one of the 1% of owners who actually dives with one. P.S. Why is the gym everyone's go-to example of a hazardous environment? What are you _doing_ at your gyms? |

Gym's aren't hazardous, but seems the majority think you shouldnt wear your Rolex to the gym. But I say do it anyway.

My couple week old LV (to me) is loggin its first bottom time with me this weekend! Others shun this as its an anniversary watch. I think I am using it for what it was intended. FWIW Diving is how I first really learned about Rolex 10 years ago!

I don't know - there's lots of ways to "knock" your watch against things sticking out at the gym - hence the 'hazards'
Coral that's awesome, let me know how it goes! the DAY i get mine the next day i'm putting on a nato strap and heading up to tobermorie with it... (not just diving, cold water diving! :D |

If you can handle it, so can your Sub. Mine takes a pretty beating on a regular basis.
