Good Morning!

I am looking to make a purchase of my first Rolex. I have narrowed it down between a Sub/date and an older style GMT II with a pepsi bezel, #16710 . They are pretty equal in my book as there are things I like about each and don't like. With the sub I really love the quick set date but the crown digs into me a bit. With the GMT, it is a bit more comfy and I travel alot to europe so the time zone function would come in handy.

I really like the new GMT-C and the solid bracelet but at full MSRP (no one down here is discounting them), it is a bit out of my range so I am sticking with the older models.

I found an AD in Georgia willing to give me a 20% discount on the pepsi GMT II 16710(brand new Z model)! I am guessing that this is too good to pass up as from other posts here, it seems that the old styles are not really being discounted. I am torn between the sub and GMT II but at this price I guess I can always get a black bezel if I get sick of the blue/red. I figure with the $ I would save, I could put that towards my next watch!

Thoughts? Is that a great discount?

20% is a good discount in anyone's money. They are offering USD4,300 in NYC for a Pepsi Z series. I'd take it if I were you, seeing as the reference is no longer produced by Rolex.

The Pepsi is a classic, and when I decided to get one, I had to hunt one down in my part of the world, used, but in mint condition with all the trimmings.

The Sub Date is also a great piece, a total iconic Rolex as almost everyone here will tell you, but it's something that will not go away for a long while in my opinion.

If I were you, buy the GMT II Pepsi, and pick up a black or red/black (Coke) bezel when you're next in Europe. In the US and elsewhere, the RSC will change bezels over for you, but keep the old on. In Europe, you can buy a new bezel and change it over whenever you feel like it.

I think what you really want is the new GMT-C. I have been in this situation before in 2004. I had the opportunity to buy a Daytona but, because the Seadweler was $2,500.00 less I bought it. Don't take me wrong I love my SD, but if I could go back in time I would've bought the Daytona. Do yourself a favor, do a little sacrifice and buy what you really want, you won't regret.

That would be a good price for a 16710.

I like both the Sub and the GMT, but I think dollar for dollar you get more watch with the GMT than with the Sub....Unless you spend a lot of time at the seaside and want a diver..

As for looks, get that black insert and nobody will be able to tell the difference from a couple of feet away..

Hi Harry, welcome to TRF!

You're getting good advice here. The only thing I would add is that if the Sub--or any other watch for that matter--isn't comfortable on your wrist, don't get it no matter what the price.

20% is an excellent discount for Rolex--you should grab it. It sounds like you like the GMT, so I would go for that one. Good luck to you.

I would definately go for the 20 % discount deal on the GMT II.

It is such a nice classic timepiece, and you can always buy the Sub later.

But the GMT II 16710 is no more made, so I suggest you get it while you can.

There will be another "time and reason" to buy the ceramic bezeled GMT.

Id go with the GMT and get the black and black/red bezels to change whenever i feel like it.
