Who here gives blood

Who here on the forum gives blood? (i dont mean a scrap out side your local on a friday night)

I suffered a D.I.Y injury in august, i severed my artery and ligament in my left hand, after going through the pain of having it put right, i decided that giving blood would be a walk in the park.

So today, i popped down my local chruch hall and gave a pint.

Good gesture and one that is very much needed from a lot of people. I give blood every now and then, but I know I should make it a point to do so more often.

Only once.... A- and they bothered me for a year to get me to donate again....

I was a regular donor for years - have a three gallon donor pin - though I was always borderline on the weight mimimum. They usually had to pack me in ice to keep me from passing out from giving a full pint! Then I started having kids and ended up a little under the weight minimum. So I'm on donor hiatus. It's such a good cause, but I can relate to those who have the problem with needles. Also - anyone there on the bone marrow donor lists? I'm on the United States one. Haven't been called yet, but you never know. I'll do it if they need me. Also, sign up to be an organ donor. If I get wiped out in a car wreck, at least parts of me can do somebody some good.

I gave blood before and after that they told me not to. Reason being was that I suffer from mild talasimia - meaning my blood cells don't hold oxygen that well.

I'd like to give, but it will probably end up being destroyed.

I do. The first time I did (college freshman), I finished and was seated right next to this really cute upperclassman I had met the previous week. The next thing I knew, I had fainted right onto his lap. I was horrified!

I bet he didn't mind one bit!

My father was in hospital having a bypass done, when we got chatting to a guy who had a heart transplant done in another hospital.
He said, he had seen people who had lung transplants done, (due to smoking)and as soon as they could walk they would pop outside for a ciggy.

The person who donated the organs, must never have smoked or their organs would be rejected.

Yeah, that's kind of like the stories I've heard about patients on their deathbeds from lung cancer, and they have their husband or wife hold their cigarettes for them for a few last puffs...

As for organs being rejected from smokers, would that even mean stuff like corneas or skin? It's amazing what they can harvest beyond lungs, liver, kidneys.

I'm O- and used to donate a lot. Drop off a pint, have a pint...wheeee.....

Then they changed the forms required to donate. A lot more detailed.

Having deployed six times and lived in the gulf for a year, it was like doing background investigation paperwork just to try to donate...it rapidly (and sadly) became too much of a pain in the neck.

I do. Type B+. I am a regular blood donor. I encourage everyone
that can safely give blood, to donate.

I've been a regular donor since recovering from a motorcycle crash in 1971 that left me hospitalized for 12 1/2 months. My O+ is pretty popular.

About 10 years ago, I had an interesting experience. The hospital where I'd convalesced called me and asked if I could make a donation. When I asked why they were calling me directly instead of going through the Red Cross, they said that they had a young girl with leukemia (I think), who needed whole blood and not plasma. I don't remember all the details, but maybe one of the medial community here could expand on that.

My former employer gives you 4 hours of paid time off to give blood. I gave all I could! Doubt I will ever be eligible again due to locations where I have been

This post reminds me of a sad story that happend to us. Back in August a Soldier got pretty shot up here in Afghanistan. Call was put out for blood. Couple hundred soldiers lined up to donate. The wounded soldier went through around 30 some pints at the FOB before being transported to Bagram, then he went trhough around 40 more pints. Finally stablized and on to Germany and then back to the USA. Unfortunately due to his wounds he did not make it and he died last week.

I personally can not give blood anymore due to some tropical illnesses in the past.

It's a no brainer.

Me and the missus have done it for the last 22 years.

You give up a pint and replace it within a day. Makes you feel good too.

We may replace the water weight but not the specific blood parts or else we could donate once a day.

I donated my Rh A+ blood regularly for almost 30 years. The best place I donated was Darwin Hospital (Australia) in the 1970's. You had an option of a mug of hot tea and a biscuit or a nice 375ml bottle of cold beer!

I can no longer donate blood as I have been diagnosed with Haemochromatosis.

I do. I'm new to the forum, and really enjoy alot of the posts. If anyone has a problem with feeling light headed, see if you can do the "double red." It takes an hour, and they hook you up to a mchine that does everything, even gives you back saline fluid I believe, so you should feel fine afterwards. The blood center told me that they separate the cells, plasma, etc., and it can be used by 4-6 different people, instead of just donating the pint which goes for 1 use...

Try to give at least three times a year. Have even convinced some guys at work to come along......

It has saved my life 10 years ago... I was in need of blood after my spleen and liver ripped, and was given a total of 4 gallons (15 liters) of blood! Yes, it kept running out of me....
Because of this I am not allowed to give blood myself, but I do encourage everybody who's healthy enough to please do it, it really saves lives!
