Geeky thermostat
Anyone try the NEST thermostat yet? It was designed by a pair of Apple guys and is very easy to use. My kids were messing up my Honeywell thermostat every time they adjusted the temp. So I bought three of these (each@$249!) and after some installation fiddling, they work great! I can even control them remotely with an app. I'm such a geek.

Very cool looking. I'm assuming it wirelessly connects to a unit that is connected to your furnace?

The best part is the remote.
BEFORE Wife: honey, can you lower the temp? Me: can it wait? this is the best part of the movie! Wife: no... I'm cold now. Me [getting up]: yes dear. NOW Wife: can you lower the temp? Me: any time dear! |

I was actually looking at the Lennox icomfort
I'll look at those before I commit to one but a change will be happening in the next month as we are having our house painted and minor remodeling. I got to use an icomfort and it was amazing but that Nest looks very cool too. |

Nest
I bought mine last winter, took about 15 minutes to install and setup. It keeps track of your routine the first week and then self programs to set the temperature to where it thinks you like it. It works pretty well for the most part but my wife has an odd work schedule and therefore made the Nest work a little harder to figure things out. It knows the local weather using your zip code you program in and compensates itself accordingly. It also updates its software automatically if you allow it. The last update allows you to set your desired temp and forget about the need to set cold (air cond.) or heat (furnace) , it handles it on its own now. My second most liked feature is its ability to light-up when you approach it using a prox sensor of some type, it doesn't stay lit all the time. I get an email sent to me once a month showing me the total hours spent heating and cooling, it covers a lot of info if you're motivating in reading it. My favorite feature is the remote control from any smart phone, ipad or computer. I can change the settings from my work computer and have done so several times. I recall reading that the two guys that started Nest used to work as designers for Apple, the design and quality shows the Apple DNA. At $250 its not cheap but worth it IMHO.

Most thermostat wires are simple on-off switches. When wires are shorted to the power wire (R), a simple electrical signal is sent to the heating and cooling equipment. This is how the vast majority of low voltage systems work. Nest is compatible with these systems. However, proprietary systems use a serial communications protocol to communicate across the wires between the system and the thermostat. These protocols are specific to the manufacturer of the system--they aren’t standardized across the industry. This means that only thermostats made by the same manufacturer are compatible with these proprietary systems. A benefit to making systems proprietary is that fewer wires can be used to control the system. For this reason, many system manufacturer’s high-end and multi-stage brands are proprietary--such as the Carrier Infinity and Bryant Evolution lines. Some proprietary systems also have the option to use standard HVAC wires. In this case, a professional may be able to rewire your system to work with Nest. If you think your system may use a proprietary communications protocol, send us the make and model number of your system at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you. |

Wow that is a very pleasant looking gadget on the wall! I was wanting to buy online immediately after looking at yours but I missed the word 'thermostat' and thought its a wall mounted temp gauge lol. I don't have a centrally controlled air conditioning system :(
