about the 5512 Submariner

Hi, nice to be a part of your website . My question is that my wife recently purchased a 1962 Submariner for our anniversary . Although the movement is alleged to be a 1560 ( I haven't opened the case) , the face is 2 line instead of the 4 that is hallmark . Could it be that early 1962 in the production of the Subs with the 1560 , they had not sent them off to be certified ? It seems odd since the reason for the upgrade in movement was to create a 2 model choice for the buyer , either the 5513 and it's 1530 or the Official Chronometer model . I will take it into my local Rolex guy to trace the serial number and see for sure , but I was just curious to ask you all . There is a stamp 5512 on the case in between the lugs at the 12o'clock position ....

I'm not sure if this answers your question or not. It is not uncommon to have 5512's in the two line version as well as the four line version. In addition, while I believe the 1530 movement, for the most part, is/was considered a non chronometer movement, examples of chronometer rated watches have surfaced in the past powered with the 1530 movement.

I purchased a Milgauss today and dropped my 5512 (circa) off for service. The Jeweler stated that my watch should, "Come back nicely."
About a year ago, I was in a reputable shop looking at watches and wearing said 5512. The man at the counter seemed knowledgeable enough, but stated that my watch was really only worth about $500. While I will admit that my 5512 is not the most luxurious or attractive watch in my collection, I was taken aback by the relative worthlessness of this piece. Can anyone explain? I inherited this watch from my father, so regardless of the value on the market, it is priceless to me.
By the way, I'm loving the Milgauss!

Earlier this month, a well-regarded seller on Vintage Rolex Forum offered a very nice, correct 2 line 5512 for sale at $13,500 (nato strap, box but no papers, recently serviced).
I don't really follow this model but would suggest his price was quite fair.

Obviously, lots of things influence price ( overall condition, correctness of all the parts, any service history, etc, etc).
That said, I don't recall seeing any correct 5512's priced much south of $10k for a long time.

I think 5512 matt dial is about 7 to 8k depending on the condition and year. It is really in a strange price range. a lot of people would choose the 1665 great white instead at that price range. but then you have the gilt dial, 2 lines etc, those are a lot of more expensive

After lurking on this forum for a very long time and with the help of so many people providing a wealth of information, I recently purchased my grail 5512. A 1.49 (1965) totally original, meters first, matte dial, on an original C&I rivet bracelet.

The watch is 95% and was extremely lucky to find it. I paid $8500 for the watch gladly and looking at prices for the last year from almost every website and forum dealer I could find, thought this was a really good price.

By the way, this is my first post and I am not sure how many posts I will contribute. I guess I will say something when I have something to say, but I did want to take the time to thank everyone in this forum for giving me the knowledge necessary in making my purchase.

I have been part of several other forums for other items and all I can say is this is probably the best forum I have seen. The members truly look out for one another and the knowledge that some of the members have and are willing to share is great.

Hi Vernest and welcome.
My understanding on this is that the 5512 was first released with the officially certified chronometer movemement but the dial not marked so. When the 5513 came out it was deemed necessary to mark the dial of the 5512 to distinguish between the 5513 which was not chronometer rated

Well Gents,

Thank you for the input. I originally posted about my 5512 and realized that when I tried to add that it was circa 1969 I failed to do so successfully.
I also wanted to post a picture earlier this afternoon, of the original box and goodies that came with the watch when my father purchased it. He took excellent care of everything and as soon as I figure out how to attach a picture to my posts, I think it would be fun to arrange the watch (after it is returned to me from RSC) in the original box with the anchor, seal, tab, warranty.... you get the idea!
