Apple and Samsung - Corporate Morality

These two companies have been in the news a lot lately both against each other and individually.

Apple v. Samsung
Well these guys are both big boys and seem to be giving each other as good as they get. Its anyones guess who is copying who. They seem to be trying to grab market superiority. With the Samsung Galaxy range, Apple must be suffering reduced sales.

I see today where Apple has just now sought to broaden their claims against Samsung to ban the new Galaxy SIII mobile phone. Apple basically want to ban the entire Sumsung Galaxy range of products. Its reminiscent of that huge case years ago where Apple claimed Windows had copied Mac.

One thing for sure it will keep a lot of lawyers busy for a long time.

Samsung
Samsung possibly has the worst customer support I've ever experienced. The promised a year ago to upgrade the Android operating system from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich....a year later there is still not update to many Samsung tablet uses. Samsung have repeated broken promises and Samsung Tablet owners have vowed never to buy a Samsung again.

Samsung is just pathetic at customer support, something which one can say has definitely not been copied from Apple who do provide very good customer support.

Apple
Apple made the news today in what may emerge to be a very interesting court battle with the unlikely foe of Bruce Willis.

Willis is ordinarily seen in hand to hand combat, but this time it appears that he has a very legitimate grievance against the giant that Apple is as a corporation.

It seems that Willis has purchased thousands of dollars of material off iTunes and the Apple AppStore. Under the purchase agreement such goods are not transferrable to third parties and Willis has apparently raised the issue that he would like to leave his huge collection of downloaded material to his daughters.

I can well understand Willis feeling that material he as purchased should be his property to do with as he so pleases and if he wishes to gift it to someone then he should have the right to do so. However, it appears that the terms and conditions of purchase from Apple do not permit a third party transfer to occur.

There maybe mechanisms to overcome this situation such as purchasing in the name of trust, but we will have to see what happens.

In my view if one wishes to gift their downloads to another they should be entitled to do so, but reselling should not be allowed.

Both Apple and Samsung could take a few lessons in corporate morality.

This is why I try not to spend money on downloading things.

Would rather have something physical like a CD, DVD, software in my hand.

It will be interesting to see how Bruce does on this. Way back in the day when ipods first came out, I didn't want my very young kids to have their own iTunes account so I set them up on mine, after all they'll be young forever right Fast forward to today and they have purchased hundreds of dollars of of songs over the years and are stuck on my account because there is no way to transfer the purchases to another account. This also prevents me from using the 'cloud' to sink devices.

Another good reason to buy the CD and import to iTunes. Also I've found (this has already been discussed in at least one other thread) that the sound quality seems be better on an import vs the download.
A long way from the days when we took turns buying albums and then made tapes for the rest of the group, or God forbid, recorded straight from the radio.

so, part of it is that a guy like bruce willis has gone the legitimate route of purchasing the songs that he liked, the songs that his children will identify with when they think of dad... these songs have DRM coding (5 computer limit).... if bruce had acquired the songs off of any number of other sights, they would not have had DRM and there would be no issue with leaving his songs to his daughters.... it seems ridiculous.

the most earnest of customers (read apple customers) are solely bearing the brunt of the digital war & penalty... if bruce needs a 6th computer, he will have to jump through hoops to have access to the music he purchased on all six machines.
