Being old is the NEW..??

Maybe its just me, i just realized that the watch trend now besides getting larger people are more into vintage or old skool designs (at least in malaysia) just wondering is the rest of the world are feeling this...

Cheers..

I agree, i think its everywhere and in most of the items:
Cars (Mustang, Camaro, Chalenger) are bringing back the old look, Clothing are getting back to the oldies style, Casio old watches are being reproduced and its everywhere nowadays, vinyl disks are being considered as art, sunglasses and so on :)

I don't think there's anything new in this, except perhaps retro-styling is particularly prevalent at this time

'Tributes', using some vintage/old-school cues are OK imho, otherwise it's just lazy... where is the evolutionary or fresh thinking and design?

Personally, if I want something vintage then I want the real thing and not a modern pastiche. But each to their own, and there's obviously a market for this type of product

I agree, I've been noticing a ton of people going vintage. A lot of watch experts / writers are even saying that going vintage is the way to go (with Rolex anyways).

Maybe partly because the newer models are so mass produced and easily accessible? Who knows.

Some people get vintage and others don't - I guess a lot depends on your viewpoint. I get interested and excited about watches that are/were best in class at any one point in time (across the whole spectrum of watch brands, not just one), and from there, I can come to my choice of the definitive version. There are some watches where I think the modern variant is the best of the best, others a vintage model. Rarity is a big factor for some people (less so for me), some people prefer their watches pristine, others prefer it with character.

I guess it just depends on how you tick (slow beat or hi beat )

That's interesting. I was helping out at hockey registrations yesterday and a woman walked up to the table wearing bell-bottom jeans and a vintage shirt (no platform shoes though) and she couldn't have been over 21.

Thought for a second that I'd stepped into a time machine!

I've noticed a lot of people on TRF like vintage, not sure about the general population though. Personally, I'm into modern Rolexes; I don't like many of the older designs.

The 70s are cool again. I hope the 80s never are though.

Vintage is great, but some new is good too.

I think it is about classic designs which are to be found in some new and some vintage models.

An incredibly well designed object can transcend time.

I think it's part of the quest for timelessness. Finding something that transcends time and is as exciting now as when it first appeared. Some of the best music ever created is hundreds of years old, and will be played for as long as our little rock keeps spinning round the sun.

I am definitely drawn to the aesthetic of the past.....(in terms of vintage ) with a trust for the new/modern design and functionality. The DJII smooth bezel that I recently picked up is the perfect new design from Rolex. Great connection to the past with modern functionality. Rolex are a company that do this well across most of the range IMHO but it was especially so with this release for me.

I agree. Borrowing from the past is one thing, replicate with added faux patina is another.

Yeah, I think trends are cyclical although always with some sort of a modern twist. I believe the whole retro thing came back when Mad Men aired on AMC a couple of years back. Not just watches too, clothes, hair and music too. I remember when the spiky hair or baggy clothes was the thing now I notice it's the more conservative side part and the fit clothes. Anyway I think watches are getting ridiculously big nowadays, I mean have you seen the latest Navitimer!? 46mm!? Way to ruin a classic! (my opinion only, don't hate me haha) What makes the vintage thing great is now I don't look like I'm wearing a ladies watch when I have my vintage Seamaster on.

I'm obsessed with vintage - all things. One thing is that you don't see fake vintage Rolex but you do see fake new Rolex. I actually feel safer buying vintage. I will never buy a new Rolex but I may at least get into the 90s or even 2000s ! ! ! !

agree with all the above...even my niece is wearing gold color casio that's a hit during my hi school years...it just seems like the watch design is just going all old skool or have the designers ran outta ideas..?? just like the movie..remakes after remakes after remakes..

There's TONS of fake Rolex and fake parts and slapped-together 'franken' watches out there. 'Safe' is not a word I'd readily associate with buying within the vintage market. If you do; be very careful, and don't go into thinking like that...

If something is worth money you can bet there is a fake and someone trying to sell it.
