New Member Intro and sale questions
Hello everyone. I joined a couple months ago and haven't had a chance to post yet. I've taken a look around and I am impressed with the amount of information available on this site!
I've owned a Rolex since 2002. I currently own a SS datejust with rodium dial (dark silver) with roman numerals and jubilee bracelet. I had the watched serviced about 2 years ago and it functions perfectly. I was going to look at getting a watch winder but my wife and I recently found out we are going to be having a baby. With that new information, I am going to look into selling the watch to save up for the baby. The questions I have would be an estimate on what I could get for it and what information is needed by the community to best sell the watch. I know I have the appraisal that was done for my home owners insurance and it was appraised at $3300 about 5 years ago. Is that a fair value for the watch? I am not looking to make a large profit, but I would like to get fair value for it. I will be posting a section in the for sale section, but I wanted to make sure I had my basis covered. I will also post pictures after I take them as well as I am sure that will be needed. I know I don't have the box and tags, but I may be able to get a hold of the specifics from my jeweler (Osterman Jewelers in Bloomington, MN.) Thank you for any information you can provide. It's nice to know I have someplace to go to get my watch questions answered. Sincerely, C. Moon |

Welcome to TRF, C. Moon!
When you have passed your "15/15" (15 "proper" posts here and 15 days of membership!), you can put your DJ for sale here. US 3,000ish sounds like the right price, depending on its condition (scratches are a minus). Buyers would want to know:
Otherwise, just go ahead and sell after your 15/15. Good luck, and CONGRATS on getting a son or daughter (you didn't specify what "it" will be)!

We're will be finding out what the baby is going to be, but it's still too early to tell. We just found out on Oct 31st that we are expecting. |

Hi there, welcome aboard!
Congrats on the new baby. Your first? One good way to determine the fair market value of your watch is to track several of the eBay listings from higher volume sellers, and note what the final selling price is.

Keep the watch. You have the next 18+ years to save for your child. In the grand scheme of things the $2k - $3k that you get for the watch now will not be missed by the time your wife's delivery date rolls around. Good Luck with your decision

I agree. If you sell now it could be 18 years before you get another one!

New Update: We find out whether we are having a son or daughter on the 22nd of this month. Can't wait!!!
As far as the watch goes, I have set my mind on selling it. I've been looking on the forum in the for sale section and there are plenty of watches for sale for what I would be able to pay. It's been a good run with my DateJust so far, but it's time to part ways. I will be posting it for sale shortly, at a very good price. I got the serial numbers, model number, retail value from my jeweler. I also had the watch detailed and polished so it looks great. I just wanted to say thank you again for everyones input and advice. You guys have been great with answering questions and making me feel at home. I will definitely a member for life. |

Congrats on the baby!
As for the watch if you really wanted to sell it, I'd say $2300 maybe up to $3K if you found the right buyer. Sounds like it may be the older style DJ. For reference the newer style DJ ss/ss with all the upgrades and box and papers can be found used for around $3300. The older style goes for less. Good luck. |

Hi C,
Welcome from a fellow Minnesotan and congratulations on your upcoming arrival. I hope you find time to post once in a while when you aren't knee deep in baby poo! As to your watch, Insurance values don't mean much in my opinion. They are only to give your insurance company a basis for a possible claim if needed. I have found market value to usually be different. You have been given some pretty sound figures. Not having the box and papers will affect the price. If the watch is in good condition, I would expect you will see most sell in the low to mid two's. You will find it difficult to get $3k without the box/papers and the older style when newer editions can be bought for around that range. Good luck and best wishes. David

Another Minnesota welcome. Congrats on your upcoming child. It truly is the most special thing that can happen in life. We have a 3-year-old and he is truly my pride and joy. When I read this in your first post, "I am going to look into selling the watch to save up for the baby." I was going to jokingly ask you which AD you'll be getting your baby at, Baby Depot? Babies R Us?
Insofar as selling your Rolex, David is right, hopefully you still have all the boxes/paperwork from your original purchase. When you said, "there are plenty of watches for sale for what I would be able to pay" did you mean that you would sell your DJ and buy another Rolex that you prefer more? I'm just curious.
