Help identifying this caterpillar.

Found this little guy on a plant on my deck. I've been unable to ID him from the web. Any ideas?

Now that I look at them I think the first picture is actually his back end.

Thanks Todd. I've been reading up on them and glad I didn't try picking up with my hand, they have a very bad sting. I need to check the rest of my plants but will make sure to do so with a stick and heavy gloves.

You learn something new every day. Cool looking guy, but I never knew there were poisonous caterpillars.

Wow - he's so cool! Would like to see what kind of moth he turns into.

I took some black swallowtail cat photos last year - love the little "face" on the rear end. They eat fennel, so we attract them with few plants in the garden.

He sure does!

He ought to be called a dog-erpillar.

Very funny looking guy indeed! I'm not a caterpillar expert but I wouldn't take the chance to pet him!

I remember running into these and the Hickory Horned Devil Caterpillar playing soldier in the Georgia and North Carolina woods.

We never touched them because of their bright colors assuming they were both poisonous, but did lightly provoke them out of curiosity before leaving them be. I can vaguely remember the horned caterpillar letting out a faint hissing sound while violently shaking its horns on its head. The noise reminded me of a velvet cow ant also found down south.

For the record #@%$&! all the bugs in that part of the country! Spiders loved me during my time there. I've had 3 total black widow bites, one in California but two of them in Georgia (simultaneously in a widow infested bunker), and one nasty brown recluse bite in North Carolina that left me out of commission for over a week after a minor surgery.
