Useless for years, because I am no longer young,and getting mature in age. Hanging in my wardrobe is a collection of 73 useless strips of coloured silk, cotton, polyester and other fabrics.

Mostly selected by me, or unsolicited birthday/ Xmas presents some are grossly overpriced "designer label" such as Hermes, Brioni, Yves St Laurent, Versacci and other "haute couture" w#nkers!... Others. club, college & sports.
These were purchase from male "boutiques"as they are now called, at prices which now make me question my sanity in my earlier life.

Since I rarely wear a tie now, and they take up valuable space in a wardrobe stuffed with other "fashion" garments, why can't I take them to our local charity Opportunity Shop, or pass them on to some impecunious aspiring young business exec?

Why do I still cling to these useless status symbols, when few of my contemporaries wear ties and their "prestige" significance is both unrecognised and no longer "exclusive"?

Perhaps keep the black one for the ever increasing number of funerals, that come with getting older. And a slightly less morose one from Asda for the ever decreasing number of weddings that comes with getting older..

And don't forget that slaves, by tradition, had a "collar" placed round their necks that they could be tethered by.

Some psychologists claim, that the necktie is deeply embedded in the male psyche, as a compensatory pen#s symbol. The more flamboyant, the more compensation.Perhaps this is the reason for the amount of ladies that now wear a necktie.

Bloody ties are symbols of man's servitude to outworn beliefs!

Padi, I was once like you, with a very large collection of ties. However, 10 years ago the "business casual" thing hit my company, and I rarely wear one now.

I have cut down my collection to just a few now for the odd occasion where there is a need to wear one. Some days I kind of miss wearing them, but I soon come to my senses......

I couldn't agree more! I used to be a clothes horse, with more suits and ties than my best mate who was an attorney. Now I seem to wear a tie about once a year, and I feel like I'm being strangled!

Well Al yes 30 years ago most men wore a tie,whether manual worker or white collar, because it was the thing to do.Myself working in a in steelworks extreme heat sometimes,and wearing a bloody tie must have been crazy
Reminds me of the old films,like for say film about Egypt in temp 40c +.The stiff upper lip British guy, sipping his afternoon tea complete with full suite collar and tie WTFF.

I wear a tie every day for work, I like them and think they look smart. There only real purpose is to hide the buttons of your shirt.

Many moons ago when I was a Medical Rep. for Glaxo, a tie was a mandatory part of the dress.....I used to wear one every day and it could be pretty stifling in the summer heat of Bombay.

I've still got a nice selection of a dozen or so and just keep them aside for an occasion.

I like them for the proper occasion. Weddings and the such. If you need to wear one for work everyday then I think it's good also. It makes the suit look right, no matter how uncomfortable they can be.
I used to dislike wearing suits very much until I bought my first very nice one about 5yrs ago. Then I was like this isn't so bad after all. Now I have 2 suits because I don't wear them that much. But if they fir right, them it makes all the difference in the world.

That's true about fit of your suit, and the secret to having a tie be comfortable is that your collar fit correctly. A tie does make a suit look right, and besides covering up your shirt buttons, it provides a bit of colour.

The ultimate in dashing nowdays is a pocket square, 'cause almost no one uses them. In my line of work, it's a bit too much, but if I was going to throw out all the stops and really dress, I'd be sure I had a nice one. But never, never buy one of those cheesy exact match ones with a tie!!

Yeah, I've been using pocket squares with suits for the past few years. I also use braces, and depending the shirt, collar bars as well. It all goes with the automatic watch, fountain pen and pipe!

That said, these days standard dress is T-shirt and bermudas, and jeans if it's cold - welcome to the 21st century!

Here's an example of two gentlemen in ties. First off is Shane with the relaxed tie. (Southern Jessie style)

Next is yours truly impeccably dressed as always with a Windsor knot.

Strangely enough we are both wearing the same watch in both pictures.

I don't mind wearing a tie at all. The nice thing is, that unless I have a 'big' meeting, I don't have to wear a suit, let alone a tie. The way I go is that in the summer, I will not wear a tie unless said 'big' meeting is happening. Otherwise I wear short sleeve button-up shirts (and even the odd bowling type shirt).

However, in the fall/winter/spring, I will wear a tie 3-4 days out of five. Maybe it has something to do with the House of Commons being off during the summer. But wearing a tie in the winter is more comfortable and comforting to me. I also make sure my shirt collars are very comfortable, so really a tie isn't uncomfortable at all. Neither are my suits.

But on weekends, I'm in sweats and ball caps.
