Isn't it obvious? Rolex loads up on fish and berries so they can sleep through the winter

If you mean that Rolex is a very traditional watchmaker, then you are probably right. This conservatism is also a reason for their success. Easily recognizable watches, decades apart a Sub is still a Sub.

Whatever else Rolex does or doesn't do, at least they don't inflict an endless succession of LE and SE models upon us

x2 - I hate those unlimited LEs. Plenty of invention and innovation out of Rolex Geneva since the beginning, too, IMO.

Thread should be moved to the 'jokes' section.

The Sky-Dweller was pretty innovative, whatever you or I think of the design. As was YM2.

I don't think Rolex hibernates.

Rather, i think Rolex evolves (albeit slowly) so that their modern incarnations retain the heritage of their ancestors.

This is something I am glad of.

please list the ways in which comparable watch brands are being innovative and cutting edge while rolex "hibernates".

Rolex advances at the speed of a glacier. That's what makes Rolex Rolex. Changing models annually doesn't make a better watch manufacturer. It just dilutes the brand. LEs and SEs are even worse.

cheers:

I think you mean on innovative and complicated movements. I think rolex is a company that makes the polo shirt of watches. Timeless designs that are rugged and dependable If I want complications then there are a host of great companies out there like patek and AP and IWC etc that will fill that void. I have owned a few from those houses and though fun and interesting I have learned since older that I just need a watch to be durable and stay on my wrist in all the activities I do. Hence the dssd.

Would you believe me if I told you that hublot have made an 18kt gold that is about 3 times harder and more scratch resistant than steel for watch cases ?

The Porsche 911 must be the king of the bears. I hear what you are saying as Rolex makes minute changes while others redesign their line. Must be tough to be Rolex, after all, how do you improve a perfect product?

Huge progression has taken place, in perfect balance with maintaining rolex's identity. Thank goodness for that though!

I love AP, but look at some of the watches they put out, hublot too. They go toooooo far (IMHO) with many of them, you can get lost, and quite frankly the brand and identity of the watch seems to get lost along the way as well.

What about Omega and the Seamaster PO 8500? A great example of what the Sub could have been this time around. The PO retains its heritage while really moving things forward. Rolex are making money by being Rolex and I applaud them for that, I wish I could run my business the same way. I know everyone here loves Rolex but let's be honest they have been one of the least innovative watch companies for some time.

How about sharing your thoughts first.

PO 8500? 'bout Omega pulls their finger out to add an in-house movement in the PO. Guess the ETA modified co-axial wasn't good enough when Rolex has been using their in-house movement in the Sub models for over 50 years.

Easy fella, just my opinion, they may have used ETA for many years but now they are in house with a very good movement that moves things along significantly. At the end of the day I love Rolex, have owned and do own many, I just don't think they are made by God and perfect in every way.

Of course it is your opinion and we all respect that.

At the end of the day, I believe in - why fix it if it ain't broken. Seem like many watch companies still has not able to establish a winning formula....
