Awhile ago, I set out on a quest to find the "right" Sea Dweller, since I've been crazy about this watch for some time now, and now that they're discontinued, not only are they getting more and more expensive, but also scarcer on the 2nd hand market around here as people seem to be holding onto them. Somewhere along the way, though, my efforts were derailed by the release of the new, upgraded Submariner...

Recently, I got back out on the hunt. After hunting down and checking out more examples than I care to admit to, I finally ran into this one...

It's a P series, placing it's production date somewhere around 2000, and with an original date of sale, as per it's chronometer certificate, in 2001. It's old enough to have lug holes, but new enough to have a Superluminova dial that still glows, albeit not fantastically, but I live in Hong Kong anyways, and it's never truly dark here.

Got home, and gave the watch a quick check up on the timegrapher. As the watch has recently been serviced, it came as no surprise that dial up, it's rate is steady, and +/- 0 seconds, with 298 degrees amplitude...nice n' healthy.

Time to ease back and enjoy, with a nice Gin 'n juice. Cheers, boys!

The lug-hole + SL dial is the best combo...only produced for a few years. Congrats on the purchase. Your dial glows as bright as the day it was made...SL doesn't break down over time like tritium...or at least not that we can tell yet.

After allowing it to settle into position, dial up, amplitude is actually better than I thought when I'd done my quick, excited reading earlier on, and is actually at 309-10 degrees...

Thanks, man..Yeah, it doesn't run through it's life and then break down like radioactive based paints do, but it can definitely be corrupted by time+humidity+degradation of the binder, depending on the material mixed with the Superluminova powder as binder. I'd guess though, that Rolex uses the best binding agent available that wouldn't contribute to premature corruption of the SL. That said, I don't feel that the SL on this watch is as strong as it would have been 12 years ago, nor is it as strong as the paint on my 114060, but it does the job for the window between when the lights go out and I'm still awake to tell the time, and I crash until the 'morrow.

Hey Jake congrats on the SD. I really like that watch. IMO, the SD is the best Diver ever made by anyone. Love the lug hole and Luminova combo. Cool thing on that to me is you can get a new dial and hands without destroying history as with old divers having Matte/Tritium etc.

Thanks, and I agree...It took me well over a year (plus or minus a month or two when I blew my disposable cash on Omegas or an ND sub

) to find the one that was going to make me feel happy walking out the door, so I'm stoked.
