Alex Karras Dies at Age 77

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/11/sp...t-77.html?_r=0

I do believe that Alex is wearing a DD in this picture.

What a life this man lived.

RIP

c. 1973 Alex and my dad were pretty good friends. One day over lunch, he mentioned he'd been offered a film role and but that all he knew about it was (1) it paid sixty grand, and (2) his character punched a horse.

The humble beginnings of Mongo, only pawn in game of life. My old man is still around - he hadn't spoken to Alex much these past few years as he was living in California and suffering all manner of physical and neurological ailments. In those old days when I was a kid I only knew him as my dad's giant friend, but even then he had a very sweet, softness to him. I was sorry to hear of his passing, and relieved that there won't be any more suffering.

There was a book when I was a kid "Instant Replay" written after the Packers won SBII..at any rate, Jerry Kramer's battles against Alex Karras were a big part of that book. RIP #74.

My first reaction was "Who?" and then I did a quick read up - who can ever forget his performance as Mongo in Blazing Saddles. RIP.

I enjoyed him coming into our home every Monday night along with the rest of the announcers for MNF - was damn sad to hear of his condition during this week's MNF game.

Wow, he did so much in his time and will be missed. My favorite memory was also his roles as Mongo in Blazing Saddles too. R.I.P.
