Inherited a submariner, is it real?

My Grandfather passed a few years ago, but most of his belongings were kept in the house. However, a few weeks ago, my Grandmother also passed, and we are cleaning out the house, currently. I have come across this watch, and with talks with my parents, they have agreed to let me keep it to sell for college tuition. I'd actually rather keep it, myself. At least until I do know that I need to sell it for debt purposes.

The problem, however, is that I have no idea if it is real, or not. Here are a few things I know about it:

The crown is etched on the glass and incredibly hard to spot, but it is there and seems to be perfect alignment.

The O-Ring is there, inside the wind, which is supposed to be common with a submariner, I am told.

The hologram on the back 'changes', there are 2 alternating rows of Rolex on the it, that appear and disappear when viewed at different angles. There is also the crown in the middle.

The band reads "D12 62523H18", and the links read 5678.

The biggest problem I am having here is, both the serial and the model are completely removed from both sides of the lugs. There are quite a few scratches in the area, which leads me to believe they were scratched off, rather than worn off.

I have been researching the hell out of Rolex' for the past few weeks (a main reason I would like to keep it, rather than get rid of it, at this point), and it seems to be genuine, but without the serial, I have no way to be sure. I even took it to an authorized Rolex dealer, who told me he was certain it was real, but could offer no guarantee, or papers. He called Rolex for me after he checked it out, and they told me it would be $850 to authenticate this particular model, because they have to reseal it to be waterproof. This is incredibly steep considering I am a lowly pleb college student, even with the profit from sale. Which is why I am hoping I can turn to you guys for help.

I found the watch with the box and the original official chronometer tag as seen in my pictures. If it does turn out to be real, I would also happily accept any offers for it. I was thinking about trying eBay, but after seeing all of the horror stories on here, I am really not sure how/where to even start selling it..

I have attached several pictures to this post, hopefully this will be enough, though I am no professional photographer. If you need any more angles/better pictures, please let me know, and thank you in advance!

Sorry for the long post, and if you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask.

Can you guys describe what shows that the watch is fake? I know the box is fake but that is all I can really tell.

Thank you for the welcome and responses. I am sad to see that it is a fake, especially with such overwhelming response. I've been lurking the past couple weeks and you usually at least see some sort of 'Hmm' reaction.

Since it is a fake, would it be very unwise of me to wear it? I realize that it probably has no actual value, but it still has some sentimental value from my Grandfather.

Thanks again.

Even though it's fake, there is no reason why you shouldn't wear it. It was your grandfathers so it has value to you.

I am certainly no purveyor of Rolex, but as far as I can tell, it does sweep. As mentioned before, I took it to a Rolex AD, who told me he had been working at that particular store for 13 years. (Am I allowed to name stores and names here? I would have mentioned where, earlier, but I'm not trying to push my luck, as I am already branded a liar here.) He was very certain it was real, and even called Rolex for me about sending it in, pricing, etc.

The watch seems to run in fine order. From what I've read, the 'click' from the wind lines up, the bezel only turns one way, and the coronet on the glass has no imperfections. However, it does seem that there is an overwhelming opinion that it is fake, even though nobody has PM'd me with why, presumably because it is against the rules here. The band is quite worn down and scratched as well. I assume that this watch was bought somewhere in the range of 15-20 years ago.

Very unwise...It belongs in the bin. I would never put it on my wrist. Sentimental value, bah. Imo.
