Ti Question on the Pelagos
it's a sweet watch!
but this is Tudor's (Rolex') 1st foray into Ti I think... question to Pelagos owners (or to the gurus), do they have a special coating for the Ti so as to lessen it being a scratch magnet? how are they holding up to scratches? thanks in advance! |

I don't own a Pelagos, but I've owned several titanium watches and they are not as much scratch magnets as stainless steel watches. The natural brushed finish of titanium doesn't show scratches as much as polished steel. Plus, (minor) scratches are easily removed on titanium with fiberglass pens/brush tools. Oddly, the darker side of the old-fashioned two-tone school erasers also take off minor blemishes. I own a Panerai PAM177 and keep it looking mint this way.

I have a Ti Helson Sharkdiver and it holds up much better to scratches than SS as stated above. A perfect watch material IMHO.

I've been wearing my Pelagos daily for over a month... Not a single scratch on the Ti, but I do have desk swirls on the SS clasp. I've been laughing at all the recent Ti hating comments of recent from people on here, since my explorer shows scratches 10x worse than this Pelagos... seems like they are making judgments based on other companies execution of the material.

The part on the Pelagos that's most prone to scratching - the clasp - is made of stainless steel, though.

it has a lot to do with the finish. i guarantee if that pelagos was polished it would be a scratch magnet. but that brushed finished hides the scratches well. all watches use TI 5 so it's not as if rolex uses magic pixie dust like you guys make it out to sound.

I think the entire 'Ti attracts scratches' idea is very overblown. I've owned numerous Ti watches from many different makers and haven't experienced any increase in any possible scratches that may occur vs. stainless steel. Unless you're shoving your wrist into a barrel of gravel everyday, during normal use, Ti should hold up just fine.
BTW, I just got a Pelagos and the finish looks great...not expecting to get any scratches on it while I wear it, but I'll probably wrap it in bubble wrap when I wear it to make sure it stays pristine, Ti is a scratch magnet you know! Cheers, -Marc |

Both of my Ti watches were scratch prone, but they buffed out just as quickly as SS with a scotchbrite.
