Won a bid on a Rolex ROLEX OYSTER ROYAL PRECISION - I need help!
Hi all. im new to this forum and ive been very interested in buying a rolex only because of the resale value and the name. Normally i dont give a crap about the name, but i really would like to wear something that would be of the same value that i purchased at in 5 years.
The watch that i won is: ROLEX OYSTER ROYAL PRECISION REF 6422 CAL. 1210 17j MENS DRESS WATCH Price i won it at: C $1,071.41. Shipping: : about 30 dollars. **Now I dont have a lot of money to spend which is why im only spending about $1000. Do you guys think this is a good watch to hold its value? something that I can sell in 2 years to get my money back, if not more? Did i get lucky on this purchase? There were 47 people bidding on this and this seller has 97% good ebay rating. I am not super happy about the look of the watch but this will do for now until i can buy a better one. Information from ebay site: Dial: Classic Rolex Black Dial, marked Rolex Oyster T Swiss T, nice applied hour markers and radium hour, minute and second hand. Dial has been refinished and is in good condition. Movement: High Grade Rolex cal. 1210 17j manual wind movement , marked Montres Roles SA Geneva Swiss, movement running strong and keeps accurate time, has just been cleaned and serviced which is a $50 value at no cost to you. Case: Rolex Legendary Oyster Stainless Steel case, measures 37 mm. without crown and 41 mm lug to lug, case has just been buffed and polished and is in good condition. Manufacture Date: Second quarter of 1961 Bracelet: New aftermarket thick type oyster band, watch will fit a 7 3/4 inch wrist, band is in good condition. Crystal: New aftermarket acrylic crystal in good condition. Crown: SS Rolex crown in good condition. Overall: Watch overall is in good condition. |

Its a bit late to ask for help seeing you have bought the watch aftermarket parts in general will not give to a good price return as with any dial re-finish.And in general the OP manual wind are not the most sort after Rolex but they are very reliable watches. Just wear it why worry if you gain or loose on such a low price watch to start with, and would doubt if it had a proper full service for $50.

You are buying a Rolex watch for all the wrong reasons - IMHO.
The watch you are buying is not rare, popular nor will likely be in high demand. You'd be better off buying Apple stock for investment purposes. |

There are Seikos out there that will hold their value better than what you are buying.
And yes, definitely too late to be asking these questions now. Not fair to the seller at all. |

but having said that, whats done is done... if the seller has a return policy, you can always return it. if not, you own it. show us pix upon delivery and we can assist further. |

if you want an solid investment, buy government bonds.
if you want a product whose name you like, buy any ETA movement watch and pay a jeweller to put your name on it. |

Much luck to the OP. Your biggest challenge may be getting it through customs from the Phillipines.
Looks decent enough and the seller has many references mostly fashion watches but a few satisfied Rolex deals. Agree with others - just wear and enjoy. And log in here to learn more about your vintage Rolex. BTW, "cleaned and serviced which is a $50 value" means the case and bracelet were cleaned and adjusted - I assure you there was no service, lube nor calibration done on the movement. If it were me, I would have it opened upon receipt by a certified watchmaker to verify no issues inside. If it looks OK to him/her, then get a pressure test and enjoy!

Considering the watch has a fake bracelet and aftermarket crystal, terrible deal.

Cannot see where its a fake bracelet the add clearly stated the bracelet was aftermarket and being aftermarket does not always mean its a fake.

It's a bit rough around the edges.
Still you're paying £667 for it ? You do get what you pay for. You are buying a watch that costs around 1/10th of the price of most other Rolex watches. I think that it's not that bad overall and to be fair, It's quite a lot of watch for £667 (in-house movement, Rolex name etc.) Just to be clear aftermarket does not have to mean fake .... surprised to hear people saying that. The bracelet is aftermarket Rolex. I can see the Rolex crown on the bracelet in the last picture so if it is fake you have grounds for a refund (assuming the person assessing your claim shares my definition of aftermarket). In my opinion by showing a bracelet that has the Rolex coronet he is saying it is real because saying aftermarket does not mean fake. |

This watch looks very nice and the price is pretty decent for this model. The seller has done a good job of describing the watch, and you should have a very nice watch that you can wear for decades. An aftermarket crystal on a 1961 Rolex is about "par for the course". For $1,000, I doubt that you could do any better, so enjoy your new watch.
To decide whether or not you did something clever, financially, you'll probably have to research sales of comparable Rolex from the early 60's. At this age, your watch won't change value much over the next few years, so if you bought at a good price, you may do just fine. Last edited by slcbbrown; 29 October 2012 at 06:58 AM.. price is ok, but the watch is not really going to appreciate in value, i think just enjoy and wear this watch, and then sell it for close to the same money, the band infringes trademark as it has the rolex symbol on the clasp, you can get a correct crystal easy enough, and in vintage a refinished dial is something to generally avoid. I do not believe the watch is serviced, looking at the movement

Mods - if this is going into a discussion of fakes - then Watch Out is the right place.

Padi, the seller does state the bracelet is aftermarket but it contains the Rolex trademark coronet on the clasp, and probably more trademarks on the bracelet making it counterfeit. Without their trademarks, I agree that it would be aftermarket.

Not the best deal IMO, if you really want a watch that will hold its value and is relatively cheap I would stick to a watch that has all original OEM Rolex components, because worst case scenario you can part the watch out.
For example: 1970-80s TT Datejust: Ebay price apx $1900 Bracelet (if in good condition)- $900 Watch head with leather strap- $1200 After seller fees/transaction costs you are right back where you started. If you dont mind tooling around you can part out the watch even further and recoup more of the cost. Case- $300 Crystal-$100 Crown-$50 Movement-$1000+ Dial- $100 |
