I think there might be something wrong with my PAM

Hey guys, I woke up this morning and noticed my Panerai had stopped ticking, which is weird since I wind it every morning when I wake up. But this morning as I was winding it, it was making a really weird noise. I took a video of it and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what it may be? It definitely doesn't sound right at all and it was very difficult to wind.

Here's the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7ocUkRCkNo

Thanks for looking! I realize it's not the best video but if you turn the volume up you will hear what I am talking about.

This happened to me a few times with the 233.

Let the watch come to a complete stop, then give it a full wind. Worse case, have a watchmaker take a look at it.

Good luck!

Hi Joe

Is that a common thing on the 233? Or is it only yours?

OP, stop winding it and try what Joe said. If it still don't work send it in for service..Dont exacerbate the problem by winding it..

Thanks Joe! I'll try that and fingers crossed it works

I would really hate to have to pay for a service already as the watch is only just over 2 years old...the warranty on it just expired last month

Things always break just out of warranty!

I think it may be time for a service, though.

Err, you are doing this without releasing the crown guard?
Forgive me if I'm not interpreting the video correctly.

That sound is sick, as in take it to the watch doctor!

Cheers,
Richard

I wondered about this too, but I think the lever is open (caught a brief glimpse)

The 104 uses an ETA movement, so any competent watchmaker should be able to deal with it

Hey Jon -
From the sounds of it, I definately think it's worth a check up.
Keep us posted.

Sounds like the rotor's spinning when you wind it?

Definitely not winding it with the crown pushed in, at the 18 second mark in the video you can catch a quick glimpse of the crown released

Thanks! Only bad news is I live in the middle of no where, so i'll have to do some research to see if there are any competent watchmakers anywhere close to me. If anyone knows of a good watchmaker in Iowa though, i'm all ears

That's exactly what it sounds like! I can't figure out what happened though, i set it down every night face up and wind it 20 turns every morning when I wake up. I guess we'll find out soon enough

Icon4 Don't like the sound of that at all...

A 7750 and a P.2002 having the same problem... ? The only thing I could think of is something slipping between the crown and barrel...

As the PAM233 doesn't have a rotor, I doubt it's the same issue.

Update: I let it wind down until it completely stopped but the problem persist so tomorrow I'm driving down to Kansas city as it is the closest place with a Panerai AD and having there in house watchmakers take a look at it. Hopefully it is something they can take care of relatively easily.

Thanks for all the original feedback and I'll keep you guys updated

Tivol? Make sure you take close-up pics before handing it over. I buy quite a few watches from them but they scratched a watch and I don't service with them anymore.

Yepp going with Tivol. I've never bought or serviced a watch with them before but they have always treated me well when i've gone in and visited so I'm going to give them a shot. Thanks for the heads up though! I'll definitely take some close ups now

Good luck Jon, I hope they're able to advise, rectify and return with speed and accuracy.
Bummer it had to happen, they're mechanical devices made by men and women.

Cheers,
Richard

Update: I dropped the watch off Friday and they told me that it should be about 4-6 weeks until I have the watch back. They said they would have an estimate ready in about 2 weeks then 2-4 weeks of work. A little off topic but also while there, i figured I'd try on a couple pieces. I really loved the 5711 and the platinum DD was a serious hunk of metal!

It's been awhile since i've updated this thread. I got the watch back much quicker than expected about 2.5 weeks ago. I went to wind my watch yesterday, same damn sound!!

I'm going to try and let it wind all the way down again and see if it will change anything but if not I guess it's back down to K.C. with it. I really wish I knew what was going on with it because it sounds like the rotor is rotating when i'm winding the watch..definitely not a good sound but it is keeping decent time by my very non scientific calculations.

Also, I just want to say I keep my watch in my room on its back with the face up and the crown pushed in. I feel like that's a normal way to keep a watch but hell maybe you guys have a different solution that may help keep this problem from coming back.

Final note, my watch was about 2 months out of warranty when I dropped it off but Panerai covered it under warranty. Given it is the same problem do you guys feel that Panerai should pick up the charges again?

Cheers,
Jon

Another update: Watch is being overnighted back down to KC to hopefully get a permanent fix this time. Fingers crossed it will be quick as it kills me to be without my only PAM

Mike, it turns out you really weren't kidding about needing a backup Panerai! It has been in KC since Dec. 19th and I just received word from them today that they need to send it into Panerai so it will be another 4-6 weeks plus $600. I am going crazy without my PAM but hopefully next time it comes back to me there will be no more issues for a long while.

Ouch. That's painful. It's one of the reasons why I have so many watches, I rarely miss any if they're off for service.
